Traverse City, Michigan — In a horrific act of violence that shocked the peaceful community of Traverse City, at least 11 people were stabbed inside a Walmart store on Saturday evening. Six of the victims are reported to be in critical condition, while five others remain seriously injured. Authorities have confirmed that a suspect is in custody, and an active investigation is underway.

The stabbing incident occurred in northern Michigan’s Traverse City, a town of about 16,000 people located roughly 410 kilometers northwest of Detroit. Emergency responders swiftly arrived at the scene, and multiple ambulances were seen outside the Walmart as chaos unfolded inside the store.
Hospitals at Capacity, Community in Shock
Munson Healthcare, the region’s largest hospital, confirmed that all 11 victims were transported to Munson Medical Center. In a Facebook post, the hospital stated, “We can confirm that 11 victims are being treated at Munson Medical Center. As a result, our Emergency Department is currently experiencing a higher-than-usual volume of patients.”
Spokesperson Megan Brown clarified that each of the 11 individuals brought in had sustained stab wounds. “Six are currently in critical condition. Five others are being treated for serious injuries,” she said.
Police and FBI Respond Promptly
The Michigan State Police issued a statement acknowledging the attack, saying that details remained limited at this stage. The local Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation. Authorities urged people to stay away from the Walmart premises until the situation is fully under control.
FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino also confirmed that federal agents were coordinating with local law enforcement to assist and “provide any necessary support” following the attack.
Walmart and State Leaders React
In a statement issued late Saturday, Walmart spokesperson Joe Pennington said, “Violence like this is unacceptable. Our thoughts are with those who were injured, and we’re thankful for the swift action of first responders.” The company is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer expressed her concern on social media, writing, “Our thoughts are with the victims and the community reeling from this brutal act of violence.”
Witnesses Describe the Chaos
Though the police have not yet released details about the motive or the identity of the attacker, local shoppers who were present during the incident described terrifying moments of panic. One shopper, Sarah Milton, told a local news outlet, “We just heard screaming, and then people started running. I saw someone bleeding heavily near the checkout area.”
Store employees were quickly ushered out by law enforcement officers. Michigan State Police officers were seen consoling staff and speaking with them near the crime scene.
A Peaceful Town Left Traumatized
Known for its cherry festivals and scenic beauty, Traverse City rarely sees violent crimes of this magnitude. Saturday’s mass stabbing has left the community shaken and searching for answers.
Law enforcement officials are expected to hold a press briefing once more information is available, including the identity of the suspect and whether the attack was targeted or random.

As the investigation unfolds, the community is uniting in support of the victims and their families. Local residents have already begun organizing blood drives and donation campaigns for those injured in the attack.
