An Indian student pursuing his final year of a PhD in Computer Science in the United Kingdom has issued a strong warning to international students, urging them to reconsider their plans of moving there.
In a viral Reddit post titled “UK Is a Trap for International Students – My Personal Experience”, the student described the harsh realities of studying in the UK, highlighting issues such as high living costs, poor job prospects, unpredictable work hours, and even racial discrimination.
Struggles Faced by International Students
The student claimed that many international students struggle to afford a decent quality of life due to skyrocketing rent and the need for low-paying part-time jobs. He also mentioned how several of his peers, after completing their Master’s degrees and post-study work (PSW) visas, faced extreme stress, health deterioration, and ultimately had to return to India.
“If you’re considering coming here, please think twice—you might end up wasting your money, time, and energy,” the student warned.
Additionally, he pointed out that a one-year MSc degree in the UK is often considered equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in India or even lower in the US, making it a poor return on investment compared to pursuing higher education in other countries.
Reddit Users React
The post has sparked widespread discussion, with several users agreeing with the student’s concerns. One user commented, “If you do basic research on job prospects, you’d know the difficulties. But students get brainwashed by ‘educational consultants’ who only care about commissions from universities.”
Another user criticized the UK job market, saying, “The UK job market is terrible. Stop doing CS and get into other fields. CS’s glory days are behind it.”
This post has reignited the debate over whether the UK remains a viable destination for international students, especially those seeking long-term career growth and financial stability.
