June 23, 2025 | New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a sweeping weather advisory predicting heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across vast regions of India between June 22 and June 28. From the country’s northwest to coastal belts and island territories, the monsoon is asserting its presence with full force.
According to the IMD, Northwest India, Central India, the Konkan region, Goa, and Gujarat will witness intense rainfall spells between June 22 and 26. The warning covers an extensive geography including Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, both east and west Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan.
Northeast Remains on Alert
Heavy to very heavy rainfall is also expected to continue over the Northeastern states for at least three more days, gradually reducing to isolated heavy spells over the following four days. These regions are already waterlogged from persistent rains and may experience further disruptions.
Monsoon Set to Cover Northern Heartland
The IMD has confirmed that conditions are rapidly becoming favourable for the southwest monsoon to extend its reach over the remaining parts of North Arabian Sea, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, West Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu in the next two days. The monsoon has already advanced over Himachal Pradesh, Ladakh, Kashmir, Jammu, and parts of Punjab.
Despite the widespread rainfall, the IMD notes that maximum temperatures across the country are likely to remain stable, offering temporary relief from summer heatwaves.
Central & Eastern India in Monsoon’s Grip
The department has forecast heavy rainfall between June 22 and 27 for states such as Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, and Odisha.
In South India, Kerala, Coastal Karnataka, and Interior Karnataka are also expected to experience heavy rainfall until June 28, accompanied by strong surface winds reaching 40–60 km/h, particularly over Karnataka, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Rayalaseema, and Telangana between June 22 and 26.
Island Territories & Coastal Areas Face Intense Weather
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands have also been flagged for heavy rainfall on June 22. The impact of the advancing monsoon is also being felt along India’s coasts and far beyond.
Red Alert for Fishermen: Dangerous Sea Conditions Ahead
In a crucial advisory, the IMD has warned fishermen and maritime authorities of dangerous sea conditions across both the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal.
Fishermen have been advised not to venture out into the following regions due to rough seas and high wind speeds:
- Arabian Sea region including the Gujarat coast, Konkan coast, off Konkan, and the coasts of Somalia, Oman, and Yemen between June 22 and 27.
- Bay of Bengal region covering the north Andhra Pradesh coast, Odisha and West Bengal coasts from June 22 to 25.
- Andaman Sea from June 22 to 26.
The IMD has strongly recommended a total suspension of fishing operations during this period to ensure the safety of seafarers and coastal communities.
Citizens Urged to Stay Vigilant
State governments and local authorities across the affected regions have been placed on high alert, especially in flood-prone areas. Residents are advised to monitor official weather updates, avoid non-essential travel during heavy rain, and take precautions to stay safe amid potential flash floods, landslides, or waterlogging.
The monsoon’s rapid advance across India is both a welcome relief from scorching heat and a cause for concern due to the risk of extreme weather events. With vast regions bracing for days of heavy rain and sea conditions turning hazardous, the next week will test the preparedness of disaster management agencies and the resilience of communities alike.
