Thailand-Cambodia Border Tensions Escalate: Airstrikes, Landmine Blasts, and a Temple at the Heart of the Dispute

Bangkok/Phnom Penh — Tensions along the Thailand-Cambodia border have reached a boiling point, as the Thai military launched targeted airstrikes on Cambodian positions early Thursday following deadly clashes and a series of diplomatic breakdowns. The violence marks one of the most severe flare-ups in recent years, reviving deep-seated historical tensions and territorial claims that continue to haunt both nations.

Deadly Clashes Trigger Military Response

Thailand’s 2nd Regional Army Command confirmed on social media that F-16 fighter jets were deployed to strike Cambodian military sites accused of attacking Thai territories. The command claimed that the strikes “destroyed two Cambodian military support units,” although these claims remain unverified independently. The operation comes in response to recent border violence that left at least 11 Thai civilians dead, prompting mass evacuation of residents from six flashpoint zones.

Border Now a Warzone: Landmines, Artillery, and Drone Warfare

Thailand has formally condemned Cambodia, accusing its neighbor of violating Thai sovereignty by planting anti-personnel landmines within its borders — a direct breach of existing bilateral agreements. According to the Thai foreign ministry, five Thai soldiers were injured while patrolling mined paths on July 16 and July 23.

In retaliation, Cambodia dismissed the allegations as “baseless,” claiming leftover unexploded ordnance from decades-old conflicts might be responsible. But Thailand insists that recent heavy artillery shelling by Cambodian forces struck not just military installations but also a border hospital, escalating the situation to a humanitarian concern.

With border crossings closed, and diplomatic ties downgraded, both sides have entered a dangerous stalemate — one that could spiral into a larger regional conflict if not quickly de-escalated.

Clashes Near Prasat Ta Muen Thom: An Ancient Temple Becomes a Battleground

Much of Thursday’s military activity unfolded near the Prasat Ta Muen Thom temple, a centuries-old Hindu shrine perched between Thailand’s Surin province and Cambodia’s Oddar Meanchey province.

Thailand accused Cambodia of using drones for surveillance around the temple and launching an unprovoked assault on a Thai military base nearby. Cambodia pushed back, asserting that Thai forces initiated the confrontation, violating their sovereignty by deploying drones and troops near the ancient structure.

The temple — part of a complex constructed by Khmer King Jayavarman VII — has long been a point of historical and cultural contention. The main structure features a shivalinga, sandstone carvings, and a Buddhist rest stop for pilgrims. Despite its religious significance, the site has become a military flashpoint over the years.

Historical Baggage: Preah Vihear and the Ghosts of Colonial Borders

The roots of this conflict stretch beyond recent provocations. Colonial-era border demarcations, compounded by nationalist politics, continue to inflame disputes over sacred temples like Preah Vihear, another UNESCO World Heritage site claimed by both nations.

In 1962, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) awarded sovereignty of Preah Vihear to Cambodia — a decision met with fury in Thailand. The ruling was reaffirmed in 2013, but implementation of a demilitarized buffer zone remains stalled.

The region has witnessed periodic skirmishes, notably in 2010 and 2011, where over 20 soldiers and civilians died, and thousands were displaced. Thailand has since challenged the ICJ’s jurisdiction, further complicating peace prospects.

Political Fallout and Leaked Call Sparks Protests in Thailand

The situation further deteriorated earlier this month when Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra was suspended after a leaked phone call with former Cambodian PM Hun Sen surfaced. In the call, she allegedly criticized her own military’s strategy at the border, sparking protests and political backlash at home. The ruling coalition lost a key ally in the aftermath, weakening Thailand’s central government during a time of crisis.

What Lies Ahead? A Region on the Edge

With diplomatic dialogue frozen, military posturing increasing, and centuries-old wounds reopened, Southeast Asia now watches anxiously. Humanitarian groups have called for immediate ceasefires and mediation by ASEAN or the UN, warning that the ongoing skirmishes could displace thousands and destabilize the region.

Unless cooler heads prevail, the temples that once stood as symbols of shared heritage may continue to become symbols of national division and loss.
