The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has confirmed the formation of Cyclone Shakti, the first cyclonic storm of 2025, over the northeast Arabian Sea. The system, initially a low-pressure area, intensified into a deep depression and is now expected to strengthen further into a severe cyclonic storm within the next 24 hours.
Formation and Intensification
As of October 3, 2025, Cyclone Shakti is located approximately 240 km west-southwest of Dwarka, Gujarat. The IMD has issued warnings for strong winds and rough seas over the Arabian Sea, with squally winds of 55-65 km/h, gusting up to 75 km/h, expected to intensify to 75-85 km/h, gusting to 95 km/h, from the evening of October 4 to the morning of October 6.
Naming and Significance
The name “Shakti” was suggested by Sri Lanka as part of a regional naming system for cyclones in the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea, managed by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP). “Shakti” is an ancient Tamil word meaning “power,” reflecting the storm’s potential intensity.
Impact and Precautions
The cyclone’s projected path indicates potential impacts on the Gujarat and Maharashtra coasts. Residents in these areas are advised to stay updated with official weather alerts and take necessary precautions. Fishermen are urged not to venture into the sea during this period due to hazardous conditions.
The IMD continues to monitor the system’s development and will issue further advisories as necessary.
