Bihar Assembly Elections 2025 Announced: In a major announcement that officially kicks off Bihar’s high-stakes electoral season, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar on Monday declared that the Bihar Assembly Elections 2025 will be held in two phases—on November 6 and 11—while the counting of votes will take place on November 14. Speaking at a press conference in Patna, Kumar confirmed that Bihar’s 243 assembly constituencies, including two reserved for Scheduled Tribes (STs) and 38 for Scheduled Castes (SCs), will go to polls before the current legislative term ends on November 22, 2025.
Voter List Overhaul Sets National Example
Kumar lauded Bihar’s 90,217 booth-level officers for their exemplary performance in conducting the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists, which began on June 24, 2025. He said the massive clean-up operation had set a “model for the entire country.”
“Just as Vaishali in Bihar showed the world the path to democracy, the booth-level officers of Bihar have inspired the nation with their dedication,” he said.
Voting Should Be Celebrated Like Chhath, Says CEC
Appealing to voters to participate in record numbers, Kumar drew a cultural parallel that resonated instantly with the people of Bihar.
“Treat voting as a festival of democracy—celebrate it with the same enthusiasm as Chhath. Everyone must vote and ensure their participation,” he urged.
The Election Commission also confirmed that booth officers were trained for the first time at such a large scale, ensuring smoother and more transparent polling procedures this year.
NDA vs Mahagathbandhan: A Direct Showdown
The upcoming Bihar elections are poised to be a direct face-off between the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, and the Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance) spearheaded by the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD).
As of now:
Block | Seat Count | Major Parties |
---|---|---|
NDA | 131 | BJP (80), JD(U) (45), HAM(S) (4), Independents (2) |
Mahagathbandhan | 111 | RJD (77), Congress (19), CPI(ML) (11), CPI(M) (2), CPI (2) |
With just a 20-seat difference between the two blocs, the electoral contest is expected to be fiercer than ever.
