In a historic step for digital governance, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has now made most Aadhaar updates fully online, effective November 2025. This pivotal change enables over 140 crore Indians holding Aadhaar cards to update their name, address, date of birth, and mobile number using the myAadhaar portal, right from the comfort of their homes. The move is designed to slash long queues at physical centers, bringing unprecedented convenience and accessibility—especially for those residing in remote or underserved areas.
A Seamless and Secure Update Process
Under the upgraded system, all submitted information is verified through existing government databases such as PAN cards, passports, and driving licenses, meaning users are no longer required to upload multiple supporting documents for verification. Updates use secure OTP authentication for mobile-linked accounts, and new video KYC methods are being introduced for banks and financial institutions as part of UIDAI’s push for transparency and quick service turnaround.
New Fee Structure and Free Updates Window
Alongside these reforms, UIDAI has revised its fee structure: demographic updates now cost Rs 75, and biometric updates—like fingerprint or iris scans—carry a Rs 125 charge. For children, biometric updates in designated age brackets remain free. Importantly, online document updates are free until June 14, 2026, providing an extended window for users to make corrections without any cost.
Biometric Updates Still Require In-Person Visits
While demographic changes are fully digitized, biometric updates—including fingerprints, iris scans, and photographs—will still require a visit to authorized Aadhaar Seva Kendras due to the need for physical verification and anti-fraud measures.
PAN-Aadhaar Linking Mandate
The government has announced a vital deadline: all PAN holders must link their Aadhaar details by December 31, 2025, or face deactivation from January 1, 2026. This ensures greater compliance and cohesive integration between tax and identity systems and impacts millions who rely on PAN for financial and banking services.
What This Means for India
This comprehensive digital overhaul marks UIDAI’s commitment to making public infrastructure more accessible and error-free, supporting India’s wider goal of a truly digital-first economy. The initiative also promises to reduce instances of fraud, enhance user control, and make identity management more secure and user-friendly for all citizens.
Aadhaar’s digital transformation is set to redefine convenience for every Indian—with faster, safer, and more transparent identity services ushering in the next era of digital governance.
