Torrent Group has officially taken control of the Gujarat Titans franchise after securing approval from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The Ahmedabad-based conglomerate has acquired a 67% stake in the franchise from Irelia Sports India Private Limited (CVC Capital) in a deal valued at ₹7522 crore. CVC Capital will continue to hold a minority stake of 33%, maintaining its association with the team.
The sale, valued at ₹5035 crore for Torrent’s 67% stake, reflects a significant appreciation in the franchise’s value since CVC acquired it in 2022 for ₹5625 crore. The Gujarat Titans have witnessed remarkable success, winning the Indian Premier League (IPL) title in their debut season in 2022 and finishing as runners-up in 2023. However, their performance dipped in 2024, finishing eighth with five wins under the leadership of Shubman Gill.
Torrent Group, with diverse business interests in healthcare and energy, stated that the acquisition was finalized after securing all necessary approvals, including from the BCCI. As per IPL franchise regulations, the BCCI is entitled to 5% of the transaction value.
The sale was anticipated after the completion of the three-year lock-in period imposed on new franchises. The initial agreement barred the transfer of ownership within the first three years. With that period concluding last month, the parties have now formalized the deal.
The Gujarat Titans’ rise has been one of the most impressive stories in IPL history, and the Torrent Group’s acquisition signals a new chapter for the franchise as it looks to build on its early successes.
