Shillong: Indian football legend Sunil Chhetri made a stunning return to international football, leading India to a commanding 3-0 win over Maldives in an international friendly at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Wednesday. Chhetri’s goal not only sealed the win but also ended India’s 12-match winless streak β their first victory since November 2023.
Chhetriβs Impactful Comeback
Chhetri, who had announced his retirement from international football in May 2024, made a dramatic return to the national team, proving his worth once again. The 40-year-old striker showcased his trademark composure and leadership, scoring in the 77th minute with a glancing header β his 95th international goal β to put the match beyond reach.
The game started with India controlling possession and creating early chances. Defender Rahul Bheke opened the scoring in the 35th minute with a powerful header from a corner kick. After halftime, Liston Colaco doubled the lead in the 66th minute with a clinical finish.
Chhetri nearly scored earlier in the 47th minute but was denied by an excellent save from the Maldives goalkeeper. However, his persistence paid off when he converted a pinpoint cross in the 77th minute, sending the home crowd into a frenzy. He was substituted in the 82nd minute to a standing ovation from the fans.
Ending the Winless Streak
This win marked Indiaβs first victory in 16 months, the last one coming against Kuwait (1-0) in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier on November 16, 2023. It was also the first win under the guidance of head coach Manolo Marquez, who took charge in July 2024.
Speaking after the match, Marquez expressed his satisfaction with the teamβs performance:
“Sunilβs experience and presence on the field lifted the teamβs spirit. This win gives us the momentum we need heading into the Asian Cup qualifiers.”
Preparation for AFC Asian Cup Qualifier
The friendly served as a crucial warm-up for Indiaβs upcoming AFC Asian Cup qualifier against Bangladesh on March 25 at the same venue. Chhetriβs return is expected to boost the teamβs confidence as they aim to secure a spot in the 2027 Asian Cup.
India, ranked 126th in the FIFA rankings, were clear favorites against Maldives, ranked 162nd. However, the convincing performance will undoubtedly bolster the teamβs morale as they face tougher opponents in the qualifiers.
