When Is Chaiti Chhath 2025: Dates, Significance, and Rituals of the Grand Sun Worship Festival

New Delhi, March 2025 – Chaiti Chhath, one of the most significant Hindu festivals dedicated to Sun God and Chhathi Maiya, will be observed with immense devotion this year. While Chhath Puja is celebrated twice annually—in Kartik and Chaitra months—Chaiti Chhath is performed by fewer devotees than Kartik Chhath. However, its religious and spiritual importance remains equally profound. The four-day-long festival is marked by rigorous fasting, holy bathing, and offerings to the setting and rising sun.

Although this festival is observed across India, it holds special significance in Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal, where devotees celebrate it with unwavering faith. Let’s explore the Chaiti Chhath 2025 schedule, its importance, and the detailed rituals.

Chaiti Chhath 2025 Date and Schedule

Chaiti Chhath in 2025 will begin on April 1 (Tuesday) and conclude on April 4 (Friday). The festival starts with Nahay-Khay and continues through Kharna, Sandhya Arghya, and Usha Arghya, culminating in the Paran (conclusion of the fast).

Chaiti Chhath 2025 Calendar & Rituals

  • April 1, 2025 – Nahay-Khay
The first day of Chhath begins with Nahay-Khay, where devotees take a holy dip in sacred rivers and consume a pure, sattvic meal. The traditional meal includes rice, chana dal, and pumpkin curry. This marks the beginning of their spiritual cleansing process.

  • April 2, 2025 – Kharna
On the second day, known as Kharna, devotees observe a strict fast throughout the day without consuming water. In the evening, they break the fast with jaggery kheer, roti, and banana prasad. After this, they commence the 36-hour-long Nirjala Vrat (waterless fast).

  • April 3, 2025 – Sandhya Arghya (Evening Offerings)
The most significant ritual of Chhath Puja takes place on the third day when devotees gather at riverbanks or ponds to offer their prayers to the setting sun. Offerings include Thekua, fruits, sugarcane, and coconut. Traditional folk songs dedicated to Chhathi Maiya fill the air, creating a deeply spiritual ambiance.

  • April 4, 2025 – Usha Arghya & Paran
The final day of Chhath Puja begins with the offering of Usha Arghya (morning prayers to the rising sun). This marks the completion of the vrat. After the prayers, devotees break their fast and distribute the Prasad, signifying the end of this sacred festival. It is believed that sincere observance of Chhath Puja blesses devotees with prosperity, good health, and offspring.

Significance of Chaiti Chhath

Chhath Puja is a festival of faith, purity, and gratitude towards nature. According to Hindu mythology, Karna, the son of the Sun God, was the first to observe this vrat. Chhathi Maiya is believed to bestow blessings upon childless couples and fulfill the wishes of devotees. The festival also promotes environmental awareness, as it encourages cleanliness, eco-friendly rituals, and a harmonious bond between humans and nature.
