Kathmandu is witnessing heightened security measures today as separate demonstrations by pro-republican and royalist groups take place in different parts of the city. Authorities have designated specific areas for both factions to maintain public order and ensure peaceful protests.
The District Administration Office, Kathmandu, has allocated Exhibition Road-Bhrikutimandap as the protest site for pro-republican demonstrators, while Tinkune has been designated for royalist gatherings. In a coordinated effort, District Administration Offices in Kathmandu, Lalitpur, and Bhaktapur have implemented a joint security strategy to prevent potential unrest.
Security Reinforcement Across the Valley
Kathmandu’s Chief District Officer (CDO) Rishiram Tiwari confirmed the deployment of security personnel across key locations. “We have mobilized the required security forces, adjusted rally routes, and reinforced security at the protest sites to maintain order,” he stated. The authorities have also arranged traffic diversions to ease congestion and ensure smooth movement within the city.
Pro-Republican Rally and Its Objectives
The pro-republican demonstration is being organized by a coalition of political parties under the Socialist Front, including the Maoist Center, Unified Socialist, Nepal Socialist Party, and CPN (Biplav faction). The rally will cover eight different routes, starting from Maitighar Mandala and passing through Kupandol, Tripureshwor, Sundhara, New Road, Sohrakhutte, Shanti Batika, and Maiti Devi, before culminating at Bhrikutimandap.
Royalist Protest Advocates for Monarchy and Hindu State
On the other hand, the royalist movement is being spearheaded by the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) and medical entrepreneur Durga Prasai. Their campaign, titled ‘Nation, Nationality, Religion, Culture, and Citizen Protection Mahaabhiyan,’ is pushing for the reinstatement of a Hindu state with a ceremonial monarchy.
Spokesperson for the royalist faction, Swagat Nepal, has urged all participants to maintain a peaceful and non-violent demonstration.
Authorities Urge Public Caution
Authorities have advised citizens to avoid protest areas and use alternative travel routes. CDO Tiwari reassured the public that a comprehensive security plan is in place to prevent any disruptions. “We have formulated an integrated security strategy, coordinated personnel deployment, and arranged traffic diversions to manage the situation effectively,” he added.
With both demonstrations expected to draw significant crowds, security forces remain on high alert to ensure the protests proceed without incident.
