Mandalay, Myanmar: A devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on Friday, claiming at least 1,000 lives and leaving over 1,600 injured, according to official reports. The powerful tremor toppled buildings, collapsed bridges, and wreaked havoc on infrastructure across multiple regions, with Myanmar’s second-largest city, Mandalay, bearing the brunt of the destruction.
Rescue Efforts Underway Amid Widespread Devastation
Rescue teams are working relentlessly, often using bare hands, to sift through the debris and search for survivors. Authorities have declared a state of emergency in six of the worst-hit regions. Hospitals in Naypyidaw, the capital, are overwhelmed, forcing medics to treat the injured in open spaces.
Eyewitnesses described collapsed buildings, shattered roads, and a monastery reduced to rubble. The earthquake’s impact also extended beyond Myanmar, with tremors felt in neighboring Thailand, where a skyscraper under construction suffered severe damage.
International Aid and India’s Rapid Response
In response to the disaster, Myanmar’s junta government has appealed for international assistance, prompting immediate global support.
The United Nations allocated $5 million to initiate relief operations.
India launched “Operation Brahma”, dispatching 15 tonnes of humanitarian aid via an Indian Air Force (IAF) aircraft to Myanmar.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Myanmar’s military chief, Min Aung Hlaing, expressing India’s solidarity and pledging further assistance, including search and rescue teams.
China and Russia have mobilized rescue teams, while U.S. President Donald Trump has also assured support.
Blood Shortage and Emergency Needs
Authorities report a critical shortage of blood in the most affected regions, urging people to donate. Relief operations continue despite aftershocks, raising concerns about further structural collapses. As Myanmar reels from one of the deadliest earthquakes in its history, the world stands in support, offering humanitarian aid and resources to aid in recovery efforts.
