Mumbai, India – The Indian film industry has lost one of its most revered legends as veteran actor, director, and screenwriter Manoj Kumar passed away at the age of 87. Known for his patriotic films and the honorific “Bharat Kumar,” he was a symbol of nationalism and an era-defining star whose impact on Indian cinema remains unparalleled.

The actor died of “age-related health issues”, Dr Santosh Shetty of Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, where the actor was admitted, said. His son, Kunal Goswami, told news agency that Kumar had been battling health issues for a long time.

Born as Harikrishna Giri Goswami on July 24, 1937, in Abbottabad (then part of British India, now in Pakistan), Manoj Kumar’s journey to Bollywood was one of dedication and perseverance. His directorial debut Upkar (1967) was a milestone in his career. The film, inspired by Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri’s slogan “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan,” celebrated the sacrifices of soldiers and farmers. It became a massive success, earning him his first Filmfare Award for Best Director.
