Earthquake Strikes Pakistan and Jammu & Kashmir: Understanding the Causes and Consequences

On April 12, 2025, a 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck Pakistan, with its epicenter located at 33.63 degrees north latitude and 72.46 degrees east longitude, at a depth of 10 kilometers. The tremors were also felt in several parts of Jammu and Kashmir. Fortunately, there have been no reports of casualties or damage.

What Causes Earthquakes?

Earthquakes occur due to the movement of tectonic plates beneath the Earth’s surface. These plates are massive rock structures that move slowly, sometimes colliding, sliding, or moving apart. When this happens, energy is released, causing the ground to shake. The point where the earthquake originates is called the epicenter.

Types of Earthquakes

– Tectonic Earthquakes: These occur due to plate movement and are the most common type.
– Volcanic Earthquakes: These occur due to volcanic activity and can be a precursor to an eruption.
– Human-Induced Earthquakes: These occur due to human activities like mining, injection of fluids into the ground, and construction of large dams.

Understanding Earthquake Magnitude

The magnitude of an earthquake is measured on the Richter scale, which indicates the energy released during the quake. The higher the magnitude, the more significant the impact.

How to Stay Safe During an Earthquake?
If you’re caught in an earthquake, follow these safety tips:

During the Earthquake

– Drop, Cover, and Hold On: Get under a sturdy piece of furniture, such as a table or desk, and cover your head and neck with your arms.
– Stay Away from Windows and Glass: Windows and glass can shatter and cause injury.
– Avoid Heavy Objects: Heavy furniture, bookshelves, and other objects can fall and cause harm.

After the Earthquake

– Check for Gas Leaks and Fire: If you smell gas or see fire, evacuate the area immediately.
– Avoid Damaged Buildings: Do not enter buildings that have been damaged or are structurally unsound.
– Stay Informed: Keep a radio or TV tuned to local news and emergency instructions.

Preparing for Earthquakes
While earthquakes can’t be predicted, being prepared can minimize the impact. Keep an emergency kit with essential supplies, such as food, water, and first aid equipment. Also, have a plan in place for emergency situations.
