
Koppal, Karnataka: In a shocking incident, a 27-year-old Israeli tourist and a 29-year-old homestay owner were allegedly gang-raped by three men near Sanapur Lake, close to the historic Hampi, on Thursday night. The crime took place while the victims were stargazing along with three male travelers near the Tungabhadra Left Bank Canal around 11:30 PM.
Attack on Tourists, One Found Dead
According to reports, the accused approached the group on a motorcycle, initially asking for directions to a petrol pump and later demanding ₹100. When the travelers refused, the men turned violent, attacking them and pushing the three male tourists into the canal. One of the victims, Bibash from Odisha, went missing, and his body was found on Saturday morning. The other two male travelers—Daniel from the United States and Pankaj from Maharashtra—managed to escape.
Brutal Assault and Police Investigation
The two women were then allegedly sexually assaulted by the attackers before they fled the scene. The 29-year-old homestay owner later filed a police complaint detailing the horrifying ordeal. The injured victims are receiving treatment at a government hospital.
The Karnataka Police have registered a case under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including:
- Section 309(6) – Theft or extortion
- Section 64 – Rape
- Section 70(1) – Gang-rape
- Section 311 – Robbery or dacoity with intent to cause death or grievous hurt
- Section 109 – Attempt to murder
Manhunt Launched to Nab Accused
A massive search operation is underway to trace and arrest the three accused. The police are also investigating the circumstances surrounding the missing tourist’s death.
This horrific crime has once again raised concerns over tourist safety in Karnataka, especially in popular destinations like Hampi. Authorities are under pressure to take swift action and ensure justice for the victims.
