WhatsApp’s New AI-Powered Photo Feature Lets Users Create Profile Pictures and Group Icons Using Text Prompts

In its latest push toward artificial intelligence integration, WhatsApp has begun rolling out an innovative feature that lets users create custom profile pictures and group icons using AI-generated images — all from a simple text prompt. This new update is part of Meta’s broader strategy to make its messaging platforms more personalized and expressive.

According to the trusted source WABetaInfo, the new AI-powered photo feature is currently available to iOS beta testers via the TestFlight beta program, specifically on version iOS 25.16.10.70. Android users, however, already have access to this feature, which is gradually making its way across platforms.

A Creative Twist to Personalization

Rather than relying on existing photos, the new feature leverages Meta AI to generate images from scratch based on the user’s input. All a user has to do is describe the image they want — for example, “a sunset over a mountain with birds flying” — and Meta AI will craft a unique photo that aligns with that theme.

This tool is not just limited to individual profiles. Users can also create custom group icons by describing a common interest or mood for the group, such as “a stack of books for a book club” or “a football stadium under lights.”

How It Works

To use the feature on iOS beta:

  1. For profile pictures – Head to WhatsApp Settings > Profile Photo and choose the new AI option.

  2. For group icons – Go to Group Info > Edit Group Icon and enter a text description in the provided prompt field.

Meta AI then processes the prompt and provides a fresh, personalized image that can be set as the profile or group icon.

A Blend of Creativity, Privacy, and Expression

WABetaInfo highlights that this update opens new doors for self-expression, especially for users who don’t wish to use personal photos or are simply looking for something more visually appealing and thematic. The feature also caters to privacy-conscious users, offering a way to maintain anonymity while still showcasing personality or group identity.

From artistic illustrations to whimsical avatars, users now have the creative freedom to represent themselves in ways that go beyond conventional selfies or pre-set icons.

Part of Meta’s Bigger AI Vision

The rollout of AI-generated photos follows WhatsApp’s recent release of AI-powered chat wallpapers, another personalization-focused update. This is part of Meta’s larger mission to integrate artificial intelligence into everyday digital interactions — making tools more intuitive, accessible, and tailored to individual user experiences.

Meanwhile, other tech giants are also doubling down on AI innovation. Elon Musk’s xAI recently announced its Grok AI can now generate images in different aspect ratios, and the company is even working on a sketch pad feature for more creative control.

As Meta continues to experiment with AI across its suite of apps, WhatsApp users can expect more personalization tools in the near future. While the AI photo feature is still in beta for iOS, a wider rollout is likely once testing concludes successfully.

Until then, beta testers have a fun new way to bring their WhatsApp profiles and group chats to life — with nothing more than a few words and a splash of imagination.
