IMD Issues Nationwide Weather Alert: Thunderstorms, Heavy Rain, and Heatwaves Expected Across India This Week

New Delhi, June 12: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a comprehensive weather alert for the next seven days, forecasting a mix of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, gusty winds, and intense heatwaves across different regions of the country. From the Himalayan states to the southern coasts, diverse weather patterns are set to impact daily life and travel plans.

Storms and Strong Winds in East and Central India

States including Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar, and West Bengal are expected to experience thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds between June 12 and 15. Wind speeds in these regions may reach 40–50 km/h, and some areas could witness severe conditions with speeds touching 50–60 km/h, especially in Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Chhattisgarh.

Northern States Brace for Thunderstorms

From June 13 to 17, northern states such as Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan are likely to see intense thunderstorm activity. Winds could peak between 50–70 km/h. Uttarakhand is under special watch, with heavy rainfall expected at isolated locations between June 12 and 17, potentially impacting hilly terrain and road connectivity.

Monsoon Set to Resume in Southern India

After a temporary lull, the monsoon is expected to regain momentum, bringing relief to parts of Kerala, Karnataka, and Lakshadweep, where light to moderate rain is forecast daily for the next week. The IMD has also predicted thunderstorms and rainfall with 30–50 km/h winds over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana on June 12 and 13.

Additionally, strong surface winds of up to 50–60 km/h are expected across these regions till June 15, potentially disrupting coastal and flight operations.

West Coast to See Heavy Rain

Residents of Goa and Maharashtra should prepare for heavy rainfall and strong winds (30–40 km/h) until June 14. These showers will be a welcome sign for farmers but may cause waterlogging and traffic issues in urban areas.

Northeast India to Experience Continuous Showers

States in the Northeast including Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya are likely to face regular thunderstorm activity and rainfall over the next seven days, with winds ranging from 30 to 40 km/h.

Heatwave Alert in Northern Plains

While some states await relief from the rains, others must endure soaring temperatures. The IMD has issued a heatwave warning for Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi till June 14. Eastern Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and western Uttar Pradesh are also under heat stress till June 13.

Meanwhile, Bihar, Assam, and Meghalaya are expected to face humid and sultry conditions until June 12, adding to public discomfort.
