A Historic Milestone in India’s Digital Journey
India’s digital transformation marked a significant milestone as Aadhaar authentication transactions crossed the 150 billion mark (15,011.82 crore) by the end of April 2025. This remarkable feat underscores Aadhaar’s growing importance in powering both the nation’s digital economy and citizen-centric welfare services.
Launched by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), Aadhaar has evolved from a unique identity number to an essential digital backbone, enabling millions of daily transactions. From receiving subsidies to accessing banking services, Aadhaar is now embedded in the daily lives of over 1.3 billion Indians.
Empowering the Ease of Living
210 Crore Authentications in April 2025 Alone
The month of April 2025 alone saw nearly 210 crore authentication transactions, an 8% increase from April 2024. This growth reflects increasing trust in Aadhaar’s robust architecture and its ability to empower citizens through quick, secure, and transparent service delivery.
Aadhaar authentication is widely used in schemes such as PDS, MGNREGA, DBT subsidies, health insurance, and pension disbursements, playing a crucial role in reducing leakages and ensuring that benefits reach the intended recipients.
e-KYC – Enhancing Customer Experience & Business Operations
One of Aadhaar’s most transformative features is the electronic Know Your Customer (e-KYC) service, which has revolutionized the way businesses onboard customers. In April 2025, 37.3 crore e-KYC transactions were performed—an impressive 39.7% jump compared to April 2024.
With Aadhaar e-KYC:
Customers can open bank accounts, access loans, and register for services in minutes.
Businesses save on time, documentation, and verification costs.
Financial inclusion becomes a reality, especially in rural and semi-urban India.
As of April 2025, the cumulative e-KYC transactions stand at over 2,393 crore, reflecting the massive shift towards digital identity-based services.
AI-Powered Face Authentication Gains Momentum
Another testament to UIDAI’s innovation is its AI/ML-powered face authentication technology. Developed in-house, this tool recorded 14 crore face authentication transactions in April 2025 alone.
H3: Why Face Authentication Matters
Contactless verification enhances safety and hygiene, particularly post-pandemic.
It’s inclusive and accessible, particularly for the elderly and differently-abled.
It ensures greater accuracy and reduces dependency on OTPs or biometrics like fingerprints.
Over 100 government and private entities are currently leveraging this technology for services such as pension verification, student registrations, and subsidy claims.
A Model for the World
India’s Aadhaar is not just a success story; it’s a model for the world in how digital identity can bridge the gap between governance and citizens. By ensuring that digital services are accessible to all—rich or poor, urban or rural—Aadhaar promotes digital equity.
It is:
Reducing corruption
Empowering the underprivileged
Digitizing governance
Boosting economic growth
Aadhaar is now not just a number—it’s a symbol of dignity, access, and progress for millions.
What Lies Ahead
The journey doesn’t stop at 150 billion. UIDAI is continuously innovating, ensuring that Aadhaar remains at the forefront of India’s digital narrative. With increasing adoption of AI technologies, stronger data privacy frameworks, and deeper integration across sectors, Aadhaar is poised to unlock India’s next digital leap.
The government’s support and citizens’ trust have made Aadhaar one of the largest digital identity systems in the world, and the numbers tell a compelling story.
