Ambedkar Jayanti 2025: Nation Marks 135th Birth Anniversary of Dr B.R. Ambedkar with Holiday Observances Across India

Ambedkar Jayanti 2025: India is set to commemorate the 135th birth anniversary of Dr B.R. Ambedkar on April 14, 2025, observing the day with national reverence as Ambedkar Jayanti. Dr Ambedkar, fondly remembered as the principal architect of the Indian Constitution, remains an enduring symbol of equality, justice, and social reform in the country.

The day is widely celebrated across India, especially in states like Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh. Recognizing its national significance, the central government has declared April 14 as a public holiday, ensuring government offices, banks, and educational institutions across most parts of the country remain closed.

Bank and Market Closures

According to the Reserve Bank of India’s official holiday calendar, banks will remain closed on April 14 in a majority of states including Tripura, West Bengal, Jammu & Kashmir, Arunachal Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Goa, Jharkhand, Sikkim, Gujarat, Chandigarh, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Odisha, Rajasthan, Telangana, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Assam, and Tamil Nadu.

However, normal banking operations will continue in a few states and union territories such as Madhya Pradesh, Nagaland, Chhattisgarh, New Delhi, Meghalaya, and Himachal Pradesh. Even where physical branches are closed, digital services like mobile banking, net banking, WhatsApp banking, and ATM services will continue to function.

The National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) will also remain shut on April 14, giving traders a three-day week for financial operations. Additionally, the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) will observe a morning closure but is scheduled to resume trading in the evening session from 5:00 PM to 11:30 PM.

School and College Closures

All government and private educational institutions will remain closed on Ambedkar Jayanti. While essential services such as hospitals, pharmacies, ration shops, and grocery stores will remain operational, it is advisable to check with local hospitals regarding the availability of OPD services, as some outpatient departments may be shut.

Honoring the Father of the Indian Constitution

Ambedkar Jayanti, also celebrated as Equality Day, honors the life and legacy of Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar — a visionary leader, social reformer, and staunch advocate for the rights of Dalits, women, and laborers. His tireless efforts led to the framing of a Constitution that guarantees justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity to all citizens.

Beyond his political contributions, Dr Ambedkar’s academic brilliance and unwavering commitment to eradicating caste-based discrimination have earned him immense respect across generations. His legacy continues to shape India’s democratic ideals and inspire movements for social change.

As the nation pauses to remember his invaluable contributions, people across the country are expected to participate in prayers, processions, cultural programs, and public discussions centered on Ambedkar’s philosophies and achievements.
