Amul Increases Milk Prices by ₹2 Per Litre Amid Cost Pressure
New Delhi | April 30, 2025 — Days after Mother Dairy raised its milk prices, Amul has followed suit, increasing the retail price of milk by ₹2 per litre across major cities in India. The price hike, effective immediately, affects all variants of Amul’s liquid milk portfolio.
Why Did Amul Increase Milk Prices?
The Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which markets Amul products, said the decision was driven by rising input costs — including fodder, transportation, packaging, and labor.
“The price revision is essential to ensure that our farmers get remunerative prices for their milk and to sustain the supply chain,” the GCMMF spokesperson said in a press statement.
New Milk Prices in Key Cities
Here’s how the new prices look post the hike:
Milk Variant | Old Price (₹/Litre) | New Price (₹/Litre) |
---|---|---|
Amul Gold | 64 | 66 |
Amul Taaza | 58 | 60 |
Amul Cow Milk | 56 | 58 |
Prices may vary slightly across regions based on state-level taxes and logistics.
Mother Dairy Also Hiked Prices Recently
This move follows Mother Dairy’s announcement earlier this week, in which it also raised milk prices by ₹2/litre in Delhi-NCR and other metro cities. Both brands supply milk to millions of households daily, and their price adjustments signal a broader inflationary trend in the dairy sector.
What’s Driving the Price Surge?
The dairy sector has seen sustained cost escalation due to:
Higher prices of cattle feed and fodder
Increased fuel costs for logistics
Packaging material cost surge
Climate-related disruptions affecting milk yields
“Farmers are bearing the brunt of increasing costs, and cooperatives have little choice but to adjust prices to support them,” said a dairy analyst.
Impact on Farmers & Consumers
For farmers, the price hike brings potential relief as it may translate into better procurement prices. For consumers, however, it adds pressure to already stretched household budgets amid general inflation.
“Every ₹2 hike in milk affects several dairy-based products — curd, paneer, tea, and even sweets,” said a Delhi homemaker.
Milk Prices and Inflation: A National Concern
Milk is a core component of the Indian diet, and price hikes in this essential commodity directly impact the Consumer Price Index (CPI). Experts warn that repeated increases could have a ripple effect on inflation figures in Q2 2025.
Government’s Position on Milk Prices
As of now, there has been no official statement from the Ministry of Consumer Affairs or the Department of Animal Husbandry. However, in previous instances, the government has encouraged cooperatives to balance farmer interests with consumer affordability.
Market Trends: Will Other Brands Follow?
With both Amul and Mother Dairy announcing price hikes within days of each other, analysts expect other private dairies and regional brands like Nandini, Aavin, and Saras to review their pricing strategies soon.
When Was the Last Hike?
Amul had last revised its milk prices in October 2024, also citing rising input costs. Since then, the dairy market has faced additional pressure due to rising global commodity prices and domestic weather fluctuations.
