Delhi High Court Slams Baba Ramdev Over ‘Sharbat Jihad’ Remark, Says He Lives in His Own World

Court Expresses Deep Displeasure Over Controversial Comments

In a strong rebuke, the Delhi High Court on Thursday lambasted yoga guru Baba Ramdev for his continued controversial remarks against Hamdard’s iconic drink Rooh Afza, referring to it as “Sharbat Jihad.” The court declared that Ramdev “is not under anyone’s control and lives in his own world.”

The bench, headed by Justice Amit Bansal, expressed deep concern over Baba Ramdev’s repeated disregard for the court’s previous orders and indicated that his actions could amount to contempt of court.

Baba Ramdev’s Comments Stir Legal Trouble

The controversy erupted when Ramdev made a statement alleging that proceeds from Rooh Afza, manufactured by Hamdard, were being used to fund religious activities, including the construction of madrasas and mosques. He further contrasted this with Patanjali’s products, claiming they were inspired by devotion to Lord Ram, whereas Hamdard’s roots were in Mughal ideologies and emperors like Aurangzeb.

Previously, the court had issued clear directions forbidding Ramdev from making any further comments or videos related to Hamdard’s products. However, it was brought to the court’s attention that despite this, Ramdev had published another video reiterating his claims.

“Prima Facie Contempt of Court,” Says High Court

Justice Bansal noted that the fresh video, along with Ramdev’s affidavit, appeared to be in “prima facie contempt” of the court’s earlier orders. He stated firmly that despite the court’s restraint, Ramdev’s behavior showed a lack of accountability.

“The affidavit submitted contains no commitment to the previous undertakings given to the court. This is not acceptable,” said the bench. It confirmed that a formal contempt notice would now be issued to Baba Ramdev.

Court Reacts to Emotional and Divisive Language

Referring to Ramdev’s use of communal language, the court emphasized that such remarks have the potential to disturb social harmony. “His statements have shaken the conscience of the court,” said Justice Bansal, referring to the term “Sharbat Jihad” and the communal overtones embedded in the accusations.

The court warned Ramdev’s legal team that if no corrective action is taken, it will be forced to pass a much harsher judgment in the upcoming hearing.

Legal Background: Hamdard Foundation’s Petition

The case was initiated after the Hamdard National Foundation (India) filed a petition accusing Baba Ramdev and Patanjali Foods Limited of defamation and spreading misinformation about its product Rooh Afza. Hamdard argued that such remarks could harm its century-old brand and mislead consumers.

Initially, Ramdev had assured the court that all related online content would be taken down. However, his continued defiance has now prompted the court to take stricter action.

Public Response: Divided Reactions on Social Media

As expected, the controversy has sparked a wave of reactions online. While some of Ramdev’s followers defended his freedom of speech, many others, including prominent legal and civil society voices, called out the communal tone of his comments.

“Religious polarization in the name of beverages is both unnecessary and dangerous,” tweeted a senior journalist. Meanwhile, several legal experts noted that contempt of court is a serious offense that could lead to fines or even imprisonment if proved.

Looking Ahead: What Happens Next?

With the Delhi High Court now preparing to issue a formal contempt notice, all eyes will be on how Ramdev and his legal team respond in the next hearing. If he continues to defy judicial orders, the repercussions could be severe — both legally and in terms of public image.

The case also serves as a strong reminder that public figures, no matter how influential, are not above the law. The judiciary’s stern stance underscores its commitment to preserving social harmony and legal order in the country.
