In a bid to curb the public playing of vulgar and “double-meaning” Bhojpuri songs, the Bihar Police has termed the practice a “burning social problem” that threatens women’s security and negatively impacts children.
A circular issued by the state Police Headquarters on Friday directed all Inspector Generals (IGs), Deputy Inspector Generals (DIGs), and railway police to take strict action against those playing such songs at public functions, in buses, trucks, and auto-rickshaws. Violators will be booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Samhita.
“A special drive must be carried out across the state to identify those who promote vulgar and double-meaning Bhojpuri songs,” the circular stated. It further noted that women often feel embarrassed or insecure when such songs are played in public spaces.
The issue has been a matter of concern in Bihar for years. Congress MLA Pratima Kumari had raised it in the assembly two years ago, demanding action against those promoting obscene content. The state government had assured legislators of stringent measures to curb the spread of such songs in films and on social media.
Officials said local police stations have been instructed to ensure compliance and take action against offenders. Strict monitoring will also be conducted on public transport and social gatherings where such songs are often played.
Bhojpuri songs with objectionable content have been a subject of criticism from various quarters, with social activists and public representatives calling for stricter regulation. The latest directive is expected to intensify the crackdown on those promoting such content in Bihar.
