Mumbai-based stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra has once again sparked controversy with his remarks on Maharashtra’s political landscape, leading to a legal case being filed against him. Following his recent comments, which indirectly targeted Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, a complaint was lodged at the MIDC Police Station in Mumbai. The case has been registered under sections 353(1)(B), 353(2), and 356(2) of the BNS (Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita).
The FIR against Kamra was filed by Shiv Sena MLA Murji Patel, further intensifying political tensions in Maharashtra.
Case Against Shiv Sena Leader Rahul Kanal for Vandalism
Amid the controversy, another legal action has been initiated against Shiv Sena leader Rahul Kanal and several party workers. The Khar Police Station in Mumbai registered a case against Kanal and over 20 Shiv Sena workers for allegedly vandalizing a club where Kunal Kamra’s show was filmed.
The incident took place at The Unicontinental Office in Khar, where a group of Shiv Sena supporters staged a protest and caused property damage. Following this, the police registered an FIR against Rahul Kanal and 19 others involved in the incident.
Viral Video Sparks Political Uproar
The controversy erupted after a video of Kunal Kamra went viral on social media on Sunday. In the clip, Kamra was seen performing a satirical act where he seemingly mocked Deputy CM Eknath Shinde without explicitly naming him.
The video triggered a backlash from Shiv Sena supporters, who accused Kamra of defaming their leader. In response, a group of party workers stormed the venue where the performance was allegedly recorded and damaged property.
According to the complaint, Kamra sang a parodied version of a Bollywood song from ‘Dil To Pagal Hai’, humorously referencing Eknath Shinde’s 2022 political rebellion that led to the split in Shiv Sena between the Shinde faction and the Uddhav Thackeray faction.
Police Action and Political Reactions
The Mumbai Police confirmed that both cases—against Kunal Kamra and Rahul Kanal’s group—are being investigated. While Kamra faces legal proceedings for his satirical remarks, Kanal and other Shiv Sena workers are under scrutiny for their act of vandalism.
The incident has sparked a heated debate about freedom of speech versus political sensitivities. While supporters of Kamra argue that his performance was a part of comedy and satire, Shiv Sena members insist that the remarks were offensive and defamatory.
As political tensions rise, it remains to be seen how the legal proceedings unfold and whether this controversy will further escalate political rifts in Maharashtra.
