New Delhi: In a significant move towards digital empowerment and ease of service, the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has launched face verification for UAN creation and activation using the UMANG app. Union Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya announced this initiative during a press conference held on Tuesday.
Key Features of the EPFO Face Verification Initiative
- Face Authentication now available via UMANG app for UAN creation.
- Inactive UANs can now be activated using face verification.
- Future integration planned with ‘Mera Bharat’ initiative to deliver digital life certificates to pensioners at their doorstep.
According to Mandaviya, “This step marks a major digital leap for EPFO in the direction of self-service and transparency.” He also added that in FY 2024-25, EPFO had issued 1.26 crore UANs, but only 44 lakh of them were activated. The new system is expected to drastically improve this activation ratio.
ESIC Expansion in Bihar
In addition to the digital boost by EPFO, Mandaviya also announced full ESIC (Employees’ State Insurance Corporation) coverage for six additional districts in Bihar – Araria, Saharsa, Aurangabad, Banka, East Champaran, and Gopalganj. This expansion will bring approximately 24,000 more workers under the social security umbrella.
Why Face Verification is a Game-Changer
Face verification ensures a high level of accuracy and eliminates the need for physical presence or paper-based KYC processes. The move is aligned with India’s Digital India mission and helps streamline user access to essential government services.
