Flash Floods in Ramban’s Dharamkund Leave 3 Dead, Dozens Displaced; NH Blocked Amid Massive Destruction

Ramban (Jammu and Kashmir), April 15: In a tragic turn of events, intense overnight rainfall triggered devastating flash floods in Dharamkund village near the Chenab River in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district, resulting in three confirmed deaths and one missing person. The flash flood, accompanied by landslides, hailstorms, and fierce winds, caused widespread damage to homes, businesses, and road infrastructure, leaving dozens of families displaced and the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway blocked at multiple locations.

According to district officials, a sudden rise in the water level of a local nallah transformed into a deadly torrent that swept through the village, submerging houses and carrying away vehicles. At least ten homes were completely destroyed, while 25 to 30 others sustained partial damage. Video footage circulating online reveals scenes of sheer devastation—collapsed structures, mud-filled interiors, and vehicles buried in debris.

Casualties and Rescue Efforts

The worst hit was Bagna village, where a house collapse due to heavy rainfall claimed the lives of three residents, including two children:

  • Mohd Aqib (14)

  • Mohd Sakib (9)

  • Mohan Singh (75)

All were residents of Bagna Panchayat, confirmed Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ramban Kulbir Singh. Another individual remains missing as rescue teams continue their search amid difficult terrain and poor weather conditions.

Despite the chaos, swift action by the Dharamkund police and district administration led to the evacuation of nearly 90 to 100 residents trapped in the affected areas. Over 100 people have been rescued and relocated to safer shelters.

Damage to Property and Infrastructure

  • Two hotels and multiple shops across the district have sustained heavy damage.

  • Numerous residential buildings have either collapsed or are left uninhabitable.

  • The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway has been blocked at five locations, halting essential traffic and movement of emergency services.

According to SSP Traffic National Highway (Ramban), Raja Adil Hamid Ganaie, the road is obstructed by landslides and shooting stones. Clearance work will commence once weather conditions stabilize.

Official Reactions

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed deep sorrow over the disaster. In a statement, he said,

“The flash floods and landslides in Ramban are tragic. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. We are monitoring the situation closely and ensuring all possible support for rescue and relief efforts.”

Abdullah confirmed that he would review restoration and rehabilitation measures personally later in the day. He also urged people to follow travel advisories and stay away from vulnerable areas.

Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh, in a press briefing, also acknowledged the gravity of the calamity.

“The hailstorm, heavy rainfall, and fast winds have caused irreparable damage. Three lives have been lost, and many have lost their homes. I am in constant contact with DC Baseer-ul-Haq Chaudhary, and all possible assistance is being extended.”

Dr. Singh even offered to contribute additional aid from his personal resources, if necessary, and appealed to citizens to remain calm.

The Road Ahead

Authorities have confirmed that rescue and relief operations are ongoing and will continue until all affected individuals are safe. Restoration of blocked roads and damaged public infrastructure will begin once weather conditions improve.

Emergency shelters and temporary arrangements for food, water, and medical assistance have been established in the region, and NGOs along with disaster management teams are being mobilized for further support.

 Advisory for Citizens

Residents are advised to:

  • Avoid unnecessary travel, especially on the Jammu-Srinagar NH.

  • Stay indoors in flood-prone areas until further notice.

  • Follow official updates from local administration and disaster response agencies.

As the region battles yet another natural calamity, the collective efforts of the administration, rescue teams, and local residents continue to bring hope amidst despair. The full scale of destruction is yet to be assessed, but immediate focus remains on saving lives and providing relief.
