Four Medical Students Suspended for Kidnapping, Assaulting Juniors in Gujarat

Bhavnagar, Gujarat: Four students from Government Medical College, Bhavnagar, have been suspended for allegedly kidnapping and assaulting three junior doctors following a long-standing dispute. The incident, which took place on Friday, has sparked outrage and prompted swift action from the college’s anti-ragging committee.

According to the police complaint filed by the victims, the rift between the two groups dates back to the convocation ceremony of the 2019 batch, where students were divided into opposing factions. This rivalry reportedly escalated, leading to the recent assault.

The complaint states that the accused, identified as Dr Milan, Dr Piyush, Dr Man, and Dr Naren, summoned the three juniors to a location, forced them into a car, and drove around the city while verbally abusing and physically assaulting them. The victims were also allegedly threatened, which prompted them to seek police intervention.

Following the complaint, the college’s anti-ragging committee convened on Saturday to address the incident. Dean of the college, Dr Sushil Kumar Jha, confirmed that the committee, comprising 11 members, found the assault to be a clear case of ragging. As a result, the four senior students were suspended, and their certificates were withheld.

“If one student physically assaults another, it falls under ragging. Further discussions will be held to determine what additional actions may be taken,” Dr Jha stated.

The incident has raised concerns about student safety and the persistence of ragging in educational institutions. Authorities are now considering further measures to ensure stricter enforcement of anti-ragging policies in medical colleges across the state.
