Srinagar: A high-profile fashion show in Gulmarg has triggered massive outrage, drawing sharp criticism from religious leaders, political figures, and the public. The event, which took place during the holy month of Ramzan, featured models walking on snow in bold outfits, sparking accusations of disrespecting Kashmir’s cultural and religious sentiments.
Outrage Over ‘Obscene’ Event in Ramzan
The controversy erupted after videos and images from the event surfaced online, prompting Kashmir’s chief priest, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, to express his anger. Taking to X, he called the event “outrageous” and demanded immediate accountability.
“How could such an event be tolerated in the valley known for its Sufi, saint culture and deeply religious outlook? Those involved should be immediately held accountable,” he wrote.
The backlash gained momentum as social media flooded with criticism. Many questioned how such an event was allowed during Ramzan, a month of devotion and prayer.
CM Omar Abdullah Orders Inquiry
Responding to the outrage, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah acknowledged public anger and ordered an immediate inquiry.
“The shock and anger are totally understandable. My office has contacted local authorities, and a report has been sought within 24 hours. Further action will follow,” Abdullah stated.
Speaking in the J&K Assembly, he distanced his government from the event, saying permission for such a show “would never have been granted.” He also condemned the organizers for their lack of judgment, emphasizing that such an event was inappropriate at any time of the year.
Public Outcry: “Mockery of Our Faith”
Public sentiment against the event intensified, with many calling it a direct attack on Kashmir’s cultural and moral values. Social activist Raja Muzaffar Bhat questioned the authorities, asking:
“Who allowed this nude fashion show at Gulmarg in Holy Ramzan? Why is the Tourism Department destroying our ethical and religious values?”
A Kashmiri Hindu social media user also expressed anger, stating:
“Ramzan is a time for devotion, not decadence. We are not against fashion, but there is a time and decorum for everything. Stop killing our culture with nudity, please!”
Fashion Designers Issue Apology
As criticism grew, designers Shivan & Narresh, who organized the show, issued a public apology on their official X handle.
“We deeply regret any hurt caused by our recent presentation in Gulmarg during Ramadan. Our sole intention was to celebrate creativity and the ski lifestyle, not to offend anyone. We sincerely apologize for any discomfort and appreciate the feedback.”
While some welcomed the apology, others remained unconvinced, arguing that the damage had already been done.
