The monsoon has been in full swing across Bihar since the start of August, shifting its focus between the northern and southern regions of the state. After a brief dry spell of three to four days, Patna witnessed a fresh spell of rain on Friday evening, bringing both relief from the heat and fresh disruptions to daily life.
Widespread Rain Forecast for August 9
According to the Meteorological Department, all districts of Bihar are expected to receive rainfall on Saturday, August 9. Showers that began late Friday night continued into Saturday morning in Patna and several other districts. A heavy rain alert has been issued for nine districts — Sheohar, Sitamarhi, Bhagalpur, Madhubani, Supaul, Araria, Purnea, Kishanganj, and Katihar.
The forecast also warns of wind speeds reaching 30–40 kmph, along with thunder, lightning, and a heightened risk of lightning strikes. An alert has been extended to all districts in both North and South Bihar.
Continuous Rainfall Alerts in Key Districts
The weather office has issued a continuous rainfall warning until 7 a.m. for Patna, Buxar, Nalanda, Darbhanga, Madhubani, Supaul, Araria, Kishanganj, West Champaran, Sitamarhi, and Vaishali. Intermittent showers are expected throughout the day in Patna, Nalanda, Vaishali, Bhojpur, Begusarai, Arwal, and Jehanabad.
Friday’s Rainfall Records
Several districts experienced heavy to moderate rainfall on Friday:
- Aurangabad recorded the highest at 120.4 mm, followed by Samastipur (108 mm), Araria (101.6 mm), Buxar (75.8 mm), and Siwan (70.4 mm).
- Moderate showers were recorded in Darbhanga (62.6 mm), Madhubani (62.02 mm), Lakhisarai (59.2 mm), Sheohar (58.2 mm), Rohtas (55.4 mm), Gaya (52 mm), Kishanganj (49.2 mm), Bhojpur (48.4 mm), Supaul (44 mm), Arwal (40.2 mm), and Athmalgola in Patna (37.2 mm).
From 4 p.m. onwards, heavy downpours swept across Patna, Siwan, Muzaffarpur, Jehanabad, Arwal, East Champaran, Gopalganj, Samastipur, Vaishali, Aurangabad, Nalanda, Saharsa, and Darbhanga, disrupting traffic and slowing public transport.

Relief from Heat as Temperatures Drop
The rains also brought a welcome drop in temperatures across the state. Begusarai recorded the highest at 34.5°C, while Patna dipped to 31.7°C, a fall of 1.6°C from the previous day. Katihar reported the lowest at 29°C, with the state’s average temperature hovering around 32°C.
With heavy rain warnings in place and the monsoon showing no signs of retreat, residents are advised to stay updated on weather alerts and take necessary precautions, especially in lightning-prone areas.
