Koraiya Jamuniya, East Champaran, Bihar —
A sudden burst of heavy winds and rain lasting just 30 minutes wreaked havoc in the village of Koraiya Jamuniya in Bihar’s East Champaran district. The brief but intense storm on Sunday evening caused widespread damage and plunged the entire village into darkness, with no electricity restored even after 24 hours.
According to local residents, the storm began unexpectedly around 7:30 PM. Within minutes, strong winds uprooted trees, damaged electric poles, and tore through rooftops, creating scenes of chaos and panic. Several houses suffered partial damage, and farms in the surrounding areas faced significant crop loss.
“The winds were so fierce that even concrete electric poles were bent or snapped. Trees fell on the main roads, blocking paths and disconnecting us from nearby areas,” said Naveen Singh Kushwaha, a local villager. “Since then, we have been living without electricity. It’s extremely difficult, especially with the ongoing heat.”
The blackout has disrupted daily life across the village. With no power supply, residents are struggling with water shortages, food storage issues, and communication problems. Students preparing for examinations have been particularly affected, while shopkeepers reported losses as they were forced to close early due to the darkness.
Despite repeated complaints, villagers claim that there has been no immediate response from the local electricity department. “We informed the electricity office immediately after the storm, but till now, no repair team has arrived. We are feeling helpless,” said Dr. Chandan, another resident.
Local leaders and villagers are now demanding urgent action to restore power and clear the fallen trees from the main routes. Many fear that if restoration efforts are delayed further, it could pose serious problems, especially with essential services depending on electricity.
This incident has once again highlighted the vulnerability of rural areas in Bihar to sudden weather events and the urgent need for better disaster preparedness and quicker response mechanisms.
Authorities have assured that work is underway to repair damaged infrastructure, but as of Monday evening, the village remained without electricity.
