India Sees Fresh Covid-19 Spike: Active Cases Near 4,000 Amid Mild Infections and Localised Surges

India Sees Fresh Covid-19 Spike: As India enters June 2025, the country is witnessing a noticeable yet manageable uptick in Covid-19 infections. With active cases inching close to 4,000, health authorities across states have started revisiting protocols, even as they continue to urge citizens to stay calm and informed.

According to the Union Ministry of Health data released on Monday, June 2, India reported 203 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, slightly lower than the 363 cases recorded the previous day. However, this brings the total number of active cases to 3,961, suggesting a steady resurgence, though without widespread panic or severe hospitalisation rates.

Here’s a comprehensive look at the situation across major states:

Delhi: Highest Number of Active Cases Among Metros

47 new cases were reported in Delhi over the past 24 hours, bringing its total active caseload to 483. Tragically, one Covid-linked death was confirmed—a 22-year-old woman suffering from multiple respiratory conditions, including post-tuberculosis complications. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta last week reassured residents, stating that only 19 Covid patients are hospitalised, and there’s no cause for alarm at present.

Maharashtra: Mumbai Under Watch, No Need for Panic

Maharashtra logged 59 new infections, including 20 in Mumbai, the state’s economic hub. The total number of active cases in the state stands at 494, with 369 recoveries over the last day. State minister Ashish Shelar chaired a review meeting in Mumbai and urged high-risk individuals to mask up and consider re-vaccination, although he emphasized that panic is unwarranted at this stage.

Karnataka: Positivity Rate Spikes to Over 17%

Karnataka has seen 87 new cases since Sunday, pushing its active case tally to 311. The state’s positivity rate has jumped to 17.11%, raising some eyebrows. However, Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao assured the public that the situation remains under control. “We are well-prepared with updated infrastructure including oxygen, ventilators, and beds,” he said.

West Bengal: Weekly Spike Observed

West Bengal reported 44 new Covid-19 cases as of June 2. The active caseload now stands at 331, with 319 new infections recorded in the last 7 days alone. State health officials are monitoring the situation closely while ramping up awareness campaigns.

Odisha and Punjab: Minor Local Spikes, Situation Stable

In Odisha, only 3 new cases were reported, taking the active case count to 15. Public Health Director Nilakantha Mishra reaffirmed that the state’s situation is “totally under control.”

Meanwhile, in Punjab’s Ferozepur, a railway employee who recently travelled to Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, has tested positive. He is currently under home isolation, and health teams are tracing his contacts.

National Update on Covid-Related Deaths

In the last 24 hours, four Covid-linked fatalities were recorded:

  • A 22-year-old woman in Delhi.
  • A 25-year-old man in Tamil Nadu with bronchial asthma and kidney complications.
  • One each in Kerala and Maharashtra.

While the numbers remain low, these deaths underscore the need for continued vigilance, especially among individuals with underlying health conditions.

Expert Opinion: Mild But Watchful Wave

Medical experts and public health officials believe this resurgence is mild, and hospitalisation rates are very low. However, they advise:

  • Wearing masks in crowded places
  • Monitoring symptoms
  • Getting vaccinated or re-vaccinated, especially for the elderly or immunocompromised
  • Avoiding misinformation and panic

India’s current Covid-19 wave may not mirror the devastating outbreaks of the past, but it still serves as a reminder that the virus hasn’t vanished. State governments are on alert, infrastructure is being ramped up, and protocols are being re-evaluated.

For the average citizen, the message is clear: stay cautious, stay informed, and don’t panic. India is in a better place today—thanks to past learnings, stronger infrastructure, and a more aware public.
