India is taking a giant leap in nuclear technology with the development of compact 200 MW nuclear reactors designed for versatile applications, including powering commercial ships and energy-intensive industries such as cement manufacturing. Developed by scientists at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), these Bharat Small Modular Reactors (BSMR) are poised to significantly boost the country’s clean energy portfolio and maritime capabilities.
The innovative reactors produce electricity by nuclear fission, generating heat that is converted into power. Their compact size allows deployment anywhere, even on merchant navy ships, providing safe and efficient power solutions. Beyond maritime use, these reactors are intended for captive power plants in industries critical to India’s economic growth, helping reduce carbon footprints and facilitate the retirement of older thermal plants.
This development aligns with the government’s ambitious plan to increase nuclear power capacity from the current 8.8 GW to 100 GW by 2047. To support this target, policies are being reformed to allow private sector participation in nuclear power, including procuring fuel internationally and clarifying supplier liability. These strides not only enhance India’s energy security but also position the nation as a leader in next-generation nuclear technology on both civilian and defense fronts.
