New Delhi: India is witnessing an unprecedented digital revolution, with over 1.2 billion smartphone users and 950 million internet users. The availability of affordable internet (₹12 per GB) and budget-friendly smartphones has propelled the country into a hyper-connected era. However, this rapid digital adoption has also triggered a serious concern—internet addiction, especially among the youth.
Indians Spend an Average of 5 Hours Daily on Smartphones
A recent report by global consulting firm EY reveals that Indians now spend an average of 5 hours daily on their smartphones, engaging in activities such as social media, gaming, and video streaming. For the first time, digital platforms have overtaken television, making digital media the largest segment in India’s media and entertainment industry.
Social Media, Gaming & Streaming Account for 70% of Screen Time
According to the report, 70% of India’s total screen time is spent on social media, video streaming, and gaming. The surge in mobile usage marks what EY describes as a “digital inflection point,” opening doors to new business models, innovation, and strategic partnerships in the tech ecosystem.
India Becomes the World’s Largest Digital Market
India now ranks third globally in screen time consumption, following Indonesia and Brazil. In 2024, Indian users collectively spent 1.1 trillion hours on mobile screens, making India the largest digital market in the world. This massive surge in digital consumption has intensified competition among tech giants like Meta, Amazon, Mukesh Ambani’s Jio, and Elon Musk’s enterprises, all striving for dominance in the Indian market.
As India continues its digital expansion, concerns over smartphone addiction and excessive screen time are rising. While digital growth offers immense opportunities, balancing technology use with well-being remains a key challenge for the country.
