The Income Tax Department has granted taxpayers a one-day relief by extending the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for Assessment Year (AY) 2025-26 to September 16, 2025. The announcement was made through an official post on X (formerly Twitter), bringing some respite to last-minute filers.
“The Central Board of Direct Taxes has decided to further extend the due date for filing these ITRs for AY 2025-26 from 15th September, 2025 to 16th September, 2025,” the post read.
Portal Maintenance Scheduled
The department also confirmed that the e-filing portal will remain in maintenance mode between 12:00 AM and 02:30 AM on Tuesday, September 16. This temporary downtime is being undertaken to enable necessary changes in utilities to reflect the revised deadline.
Over 7 Crore ITRs Already Filed
The extension comes against the backdrop of a massive compliance push, with the Income Tax Department revealing that over seven crore ITRs had already been filed for AY 2025-26 as of September 15. With millions of taxpayers still rushing to meet the deadline, the one-day extension is expected to ease the pressure on both users and the online system.
A Last-Minute Breather for Taxpayers
While the extension is only by a single day, it provides much-needed breathing space for individuals and businesses struggling with last-minute documentation or facing technical hurdles. Experts believe the move reflects the government’s recognition of high traffic on the e-filing portal as the original deadline approached.
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has not indicated any further extensions beyond September 16, making it crucial for taxpayers to complete their filings within the stipulated timeline.
