New Delhi, April 16, 2025: In a significant move for India’s judiciary, Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai has been recommended as the next Chief Justice of India (CJI), making him the 52nd head of the Supreme Court. The Law Ministry has received the formal recommendation from the current Chief Justice, Sanjiv Khanna, whose tenure is set to conclude on May 13.
Justice Gavai will take the oath of office on May 14, 2025, and will serve a tenure of six months, up until November 2025.
The Union Law Ministry had recently written to CJI Sanjiv Khanna, seeking his nomination for his successor, as per the longstanding convention of seniority in the apex court. Justice Khanna responded by proposing Justice Gavai’s name, who is the senior-most judge after him in the current Supreme Court lineup.
This transition follows a routine yet vital constitutional process that ensures continuity and stability in the country’s judicial leadership. Justice Gavai’s elevation will also be historic in many ways — he will be only the second Dalit judge after former CJI K.G. Balakrishnan to reach the top judicial post in the nation.
