Parliament Monsoon Session 2025: After a pause of more than three months, the Indian Parliament is set to resume work as Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju announced on Wednesday that the Monsoon Session 2025 will begin on July 21 and run till August 12. Both Houses — Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha — will convene at 11 AM on the opening day, marking the beginning of what is expected to be a politically charged session.
The announcement came after a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs (CCPA), chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, recommended the session dates. “We have decided to hold the Monsoon Session of Parliament from July 21 to August 12,” Rijiju told reporters, adding that all issues can be raised as per parliamentary rules.
This session follows the Budget Session 2025, which had commenced on January 31 and was adjourned sine die on April 4, bringing the first parliamentary phase of the year to a close.
Key Debates Expected: Operation Sindoor & Pahalgam Attack
This Monsoon Session is poised to be particularly significant due to recent national security developments. The government’s covert military exercise, Operation Sindoor, which targeted nine terrorist hideouts in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), has stirred heated political debate. Opposition parties have been pressing for a special session to deliberate on the operation, demanding transparency and clarity on India’s military action.
However, Minister Rijiju clarified that such matters can be discussed during the upcoming session itself, signaling the government’s readiness to engage in debate.
Adding to the political gravity is the Pahalgam terror attack, where 26 civilians lost their lives in a brutal assault by militants in Jammu & Kashmir. This was the deadliest civilian attack in the region in recent years and has already galvanized public and political attention across the spectrum.
Given the scale and sensitivity of these incidents, both Operation Sindoor and the Pahalgam massacre are expected to dominate the initial days of the session, with national security likely taking center stage.
Impeachment Motion Against Justice Yashwant Varma on the Agenda
Apart from national security, the session will also witness a potentially historic move as the government plans to introduce an impeachment motion against former Delhi High Court judge Justice Yashwant Varma. While the precise grounds of impeachment have not been formally disclosed, sources indicate serious allegations related to judicial impropriety and misconduct.
The government has already begun consultations with Opposition leaders to build a political consensus on the motion. If tabled, this will mark one of the rare instances of impeachment proceedings being initiated against a judge in India — a process that requires significant legal scrutiny and two-thirds majority in both Houses.
A Test for Political Unity
The Monsoon Session is shaping up to be a litmus test for cross-party cooperation and legislative focus. With the Opposition gearing up for sharp questioning on issues of national interest, and the government pushing its legislative priorities — including pending bills from the Budget Session — the coming weeks are expected to be intense inside Parliament.
Observers believe that the government will attempt to balance debate on contentious issues with legislative productivity, especially with state elections on the horizon and national security shaping public discourse.
The Monsoon Session traditionally serves as a crucial bridge between the first half and second half of the political year, and this time, its importance is even greater.
As July 21 draws closer, political circles are abuzz with speculation, preparation, and strategy. The Parliament is not just set to reconvene — it is expected to become the nation’s epicenter of debate on military action, terrorism, judicial accountability, and the broader direction of governance.
