Myanmar Earthquake Death Toll Surpasses 3,000; Junta Declares Temporary Ceasefire

Naypyidaw, Myanmar: The devastating earthquake that struck Myanmar on Friday has claimed over 3,000 lives, with the death toll continuing to rise. In response, the ruling junta government has declared a temporary ceasefire in the country’s ongoing civil war until April 22 to facilitate relief operations and express solidarity with the affected citizens. The announcement was made through a state-run television broadcast on Wednesday.

Ceasefire Amid Ongoing Civil War

A statement from the military high command confirmed the ceasefire, following a similar unilateral truce declared by armed resistance groups opposing the junta. The government emphasized that ethnic armed organizations and local resistance groups should refrain from attacking state security forces or military installations. Additionally, they have been urged not to mobilize, gather troops, or expand their territorial control during this period.

Appeal to Rebel Groups

The junta has called on armed opposition forces to suspend their attacks, warning that failure to comply could prompt military retaliation. The statement stressed that while the ceasefire is in place, any hostile actions against government forces will be met with necessary countermeasures.

Earthquake Triggers Massive Destruction

Myanmar, already grappling with a civil conflict for nearly two years, has been further devastated by the earthquake. The disaster has led to widespread destruction, leaving thousands homeless and requiring urgent humanitarian assistance. Rescue operations, supported by India and China, are underway to assist those affected.

New Leadership Amid Crisis

The earthquake struck Myanmar just a day after the junta’s leader was sworn in as president, adding further challenges to an already unstable political landscape. The government’s ability to manage the crisis and maintain stability remains under scrutiny as relief efforts continue.
