North India Weather Alert: North India is set to witness a significant shift in weather conditions starting May 1, with thunderstorms, dust storms, and widespread rainfall expected across several states. According to a fresh weather update from Skymet Weather, pre-monsoon activities that had been largely missing in April are finally set to begin across the northwestern plains of India, offering much-needed relief from the scorching heat.
Rain to Begin in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Delhi
Skymet’s report indicates that parts of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Delhi will likely see rainfall from May 1 onward. While April recorded minimal pre-monsoon activity across these regions, the new weather system forming over North India is expected to change that trend. However, over the next 48 hours, no significant changes are expected. The real shift begins in May, starting with isolated showers and gradually spreading across wider regions.
Western Disturbance to Trigger Weather Change
A new western disturbance is expected to make landfall in the Himalayan region on May 1. In addition to this, a cyclonic circulation may develop over parts of Rajasthan and Punjab. Accompanying this system will be a trough line extending from west to east, leading to intensified weather activity. This combination is expected to trigger thunderstorms, strong winds, and scattered rainfall.
Widespread Rainfall from May 3 to May 8
The impact of this new weather system will be more visible from May 3 onwards, as rain is forecast to cover a larger geographical area. Skymet predicts that between May 3 and May 8, most parts of North India will witness unseasonal showers accompanied by gusty winds, dust storms, and lightning. States such as Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan are on alert for potential severe weather events.
Temperature Set to Dip by 3–4°C
With the onset of rainfall and increased cloud cover, the temperature is expected to dip by 3 to 4 degrees Celsius across several areas in North India. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that the incoming rain and thunderstorms will offer relief from the persistent heatwave, especially in Rajasthan, Delhi, and surrounding regions. From May 2 onwards, heatwave conditions are likely to subside.
On May 1 itself, isolated parts of Jodhpur, Bikaner, Ajmer, and Jaipur divisions in Rajasthan are expected to receive light showers post noon, accompanied by strong gusty winds and thunder. The IMD has also warned of possible thunderstorms with lightning in various districts.
What to Expect:
- May 1: Rain activity likely begins in Rajasthan.
- May 2: Rain and thunderstorms expected in Delhi, Punjab, and Haryana.
- May 3–8: Widespread rain across northern plains with thunderstorms and gusty winds.
- Temperature Drop: Likely fall of 3–4°C after May 1; respite from heatwaves expected by May 2.
Residents are advised to stay updated with daily forecasts, secure loose items outdoors, and take necessary precautions during thunderstorm events.
