Patna’s Ganga Ghat to Get a Makeover: ₹387 Cr Green Tourism Project Set to Transform Cityscape

Patna, Bihar – In a bold step towards sustainable urban development, Patna is preparing to redefine its riverfront with the launch of an ambitious ₹387.40 crore project named JP Ganga Path Samagra Udyan. Slated for completion within two years, the sprawling green initiative will transform nearly 50 hectares along the banks of the Ganga into a vibrant and eco-conscious public destination.

The move comes as part of the Bihar government’s larger vision to position Patna as a cultural and tourist hotspot while addressing urban ecological needs.

A Green Oasis in the Heart of Patna

Set against the backdrop of the sacred Ganga river, the upcoming project will blend modern infrastructure with environmental stewardship. Of the 49.7 hectares of land designated for development, a massive 90% will remain green and open, making it one of the most environmentally progressive urban parks in eastern India.

A signature element of the park will be the plantation of over one lakh trees, aimed at significantly improving the city’s air quality and adding to its green cover.

The planned ecological park, spread across 8 hectares, will be inspired by the 27 traditional constellations from Indian astronomy—creating a one-of-a-kind immersive experience where visitors can engage with science, culture, and nature in unison. Complementing this will be a butterfly garden, designed to attract native species and spark curiosity among children and nature enthusiasts alike.

Amenities for All: Walkways, Cycle Tracks & Markets

Accessibility is a key focus of the Ganga Path Udyan project. A 6-kilometer riverside walkway is planned to offer pedestrians a scenic route along the river, while dedicated cycling tracks aim to encourage green mobility.

For shoppers and local entrepreneurs, the park will house an urban women’s market and a food court, ensuring a vibrant, inclusive atmosphere. Ample parking space for 4,000 four-wheelers and 13,000 two-wheelers will make the area easily accessible for both locals and tourists.

A Vision Backed by Action

Bihar’s Road Construction Minister, Nitin Naveen, emphasized the transformative potential of the project, noting that it aligns with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s long-standing vision for a greener and more developed Patna.

“This is not just about tourism—it’s about sustainability, culture, and smart urban planning,” Naveen said. “We are committed to executing this project on time and with the highest quality standards. The tender process began just two months after the announcement, which reflects our urgency and commitment.”

The Bihar State Path Nirman Nigam Limited has already floated tenders for the project’s first phase, which will cover a 7-kilometer stretch from Digha to Gandhi Maidan—two of the city’s most prominent landmarks. The tender window will be open from April 27 to May 26, with contractors selected based on quality, efficiency, and adherence to timelines.

Boosting Patna’s Urban Identity

More than just a beautification effort, the JP Ganga Path Samagra Udyan is part of a broader government strategy to redefine Patna’s urban identity, turning the Ganga riverbank into a thriving hub of leisure, ecology, and culture.

Once completed, the project is expected to boost tourism, offer much-needed green space for residents, and serve as a model for climate-resilient urban planning in India.

With a focus on heritage, environment, and inclusive development, this riverfront transformation marks a new chapter in the evolution of Patna—one that balances modern needs with a deep respect for tradition and nature.
