Russia Launches Largest Aerial Assault on Ukraine with 550 Drones and Missiles, Injures 23 in Kyiv

Kyiv, Ukraine – July 4, 2025 — In what is now being called the largest aerial assault since the start of the Russia-Ukraine war, Ukraine’s air force confirmed on Friday that Russia launched a staggering 550 drones and missiles in a massive overnight strike targeting the Ukrainian capital Kyiv and several other regions. The assault left at least 23 people injured, 14 of whom required hospitalization, and caused widespread destruction across the city.

According to Ukraine’s air force, the Kremlin deployed hundreds of Shahed drones, believed to be Iranian-made, along with 11 missiles, in a wave of attacks that began late Thursday night and continued into the early hours of Friday morning.

A City Under Siege

Residents of Kyiv described a terrifying night, with the constant buzz of drones overhead, followed by loud explosions and intermittent machine gun fire as Ukrainian forces attempted to intercept the aerial assault. The capital’s skyline was intermittently lit up by defensive fire and anti-aircraft flares.

“Every few seconds, we heard an explosion or a burst of gunfire. It felt like the city was breathing chaos,” said Olga K., a resident in Kyiv’s Podil district who took shelter in a basement with her family.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that the capital bore the brunt of the attack, with at least 33 sites damaged by drone debris, including residential buildings, public infrastructure, and transport hubs.

Massive Interception Efforts

Ukraine’s air defense system sprang into action with full force. Authorities reported that 270 aerial targets were successfully intercepted, including two cruise missiles. However, 208 drones and missiles went off the radar, presumed jammed or lost in counter-electronic warfare.

Despite Ukraine’s best efforts, Russia managed to hit at least eight key locations, including military installations and power grids, using nine missiles and 63 drones, according to an Associated Press report.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy took to X (formerly Twitter) to update the nation and the international community on the scale of the attack. Notably, he hinted at the timing of the strike, stating that the first air raid sirens in Ukrainian cities rang out almost in tandem with media reports of a phone call between former US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Timing Raises Eyebrows

The timing of Russia’s heaviest attack so far in the war has sparked intense speculation. According to multiple international media outlets, former President Trump reportedly spoke with Vladimir Putin just hours before the missiles rained down on Ukraine.

Although there is no official confirmation linking the call to the strike, the coincidence has not gone unnoticed in diplomatic and defense circles. Critics of the Trump-Putin engagement have raised concerns about its implications on ongoing U.S. foreign policy, especially as peace talks led by the U.S. remain stalled.

A Pattern of Escalation

This assault comes barely a week after Moscow’s previous largest aerial attack, in which 537 drones and 60 missiles were launched in a calculated attempt to wear down Ukrainian defenses. Friday’s barrage marks a dangerous escalation, signaling that Russia may be stepping up its offensive efforts amid mounting international tensions and a growing deadlock in diplomatic negotiations.

Military analysts suggest that these mass drone attacks are designed not just to cause physical damage but to drain Ukraine’s air defense resources, such as ammunition and radar capacities.

International Reactions and Warnings

As news of the attack spread, international leaders expressed solidarity with Ukraine. European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell condemned the assault, calling it “a deliberate attack on civilians and critical infrastructure.”

The United Nations has also issued a statement urging restraint and calling for a renewed focus on diplomacy, warning that continued escalation would only worsen the humanitarian crisis.

Meanwhile, NATO has called an emergency meeting to discuss the incident and possible responses, as calls for more air defense aid to Ukraine grow louder.

Human Cost Beyond the Numbers

Though Kyiv has managed to defend itself heroically under repeated assaults, the psychological toll on its citizens is growing. Public shelters are overflowing, and trauma counseling centers have reported a spike in cases, particularly among children and the elderly.

“For many here, this is not just a war between nations. It’s a daily battle for survival, for sanity, for dignity,” said Lena Mazur, a volunteer working with displaced families in the capital.

As of now, the full extent of damage is still being assessed, and rescue and recovery operations continue across the affected areas. Ukrainian officials have warned of possible follow-up attacks, urging citizens to remain cautious and adhere to air raid alerts.

While Ukraine’s resolve remains unbroken, Friday’s massive aerial strike marks a dangerous turn in the ongoing conflict—a sobering reminder that peace remains a distant goal, and the human cost continues to rise.
