Indian-origin NASA astronaut Sunita Williams, who has been aboard the International Space Station (ISS) since June 2024, has made significant contributions to space science and exploration. During her extended stay, Williams has conducted numerous groundbreaking experiments and surpassed major milestones, including setting a new record for total spacewalking time. As Williams, along with fellow NASA astronaut Butch Wilmore and Roscosmos cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov, prepares to return to Earth, here’s a look at some of her key accomplishments during this mission.

Growing Greens in Space

Sunita Williams played a vital role in advancing research on space-based food production. She assisted with the cultivation of crimson-hued romaine lettuce in the Advanced Plant Habitat as part of the Plant Habitat-07 project. This experiment focused on understanding how varying moisture levels affect microbial communities in plants and their water systems. The findings from this study could pave the way for developing sustainable and nutritious food sources for long-duration space missions.

The research could help scientists create systems that ensure reliable food production in challenging space environments, which would be crucial for future missions to the Moon and Mars.

Breaking the Spacewalking Record

Williams also made history by surpassing former astronaut Peggy Whitson’s record for total spacewalking time. On her ninth spacewalk, conducted alongside Butch Wilmore, Williams spent 5 hours and 26 minutes outside the ISS.

NASA confirmed that this achievement brought Williams’ total spacewalking time to 62 hours and 6 minutes, making her fourth on NASA’s all-time list for cumulative spacewalk time. NASA celebrated the milestone on X (formerly Twitter), highlighting Williams’ remarkable contribution to the space program.

Packed Bed Reactor Experiment for Water Recovery

Williams was instrumental in setting up the Packed Bed Reactor Experiment: Water Recovery Series (PBRE-WRS), which investigates how gravitational changes affect fluid interactions in packed bed reactors. These reactors are filled with materials like pellets or beads, designed to enhance the contact between liquids and gases.

The experiment aims to improve the efficiency of water recovery systems, heat management, and fuel cells for future space missions. The results could also enhance the design of similar systems used on Earth.

Advancing Biomanufacturing in Microgravity

As part of the Rhodium Biomanufacturing 03 study, Williams handled bacterial and yeast samples to explore how microgravity affects microbial growth and metabolic functions. The absence of gravity changes how cells grow and behave, which could have a significant impact on biomanufacturing processes in space.

This research is expected to lead to advancements in producing food, medicine, and essential materials in space, reducing the need to transport large quantities of supplies from Earth.

Producing Essential Vitamins in Space

Williams also contributed to the BioNutrients project, which focuses on producing essential nutrients during extended space missions. The project explores how specially engineered microorganisms, such as yeast, can produce vitamins and nutrients that degrade over time when stored.

Williams worked with custom-designed growth containers to study how these microbes could produce dietary supplements, ensuring that astronauts receive essential nutrients even during long missions.
