Washington, D.C. – May 10, 2025: In a bold move to reshape America’s global trade strategy, President Donald Trump confirmed the implementation of a minimum 10% baseline tariff on all imported goods. The decision, effective from April 5, aims to strengthen domestic manufacturing and reassert America’s control over international trade dynamics.
Speaking at a press briefing, Trump emphasized that the new tariff regime marks a shift toward what he called “fair and reciprocal trade.” While the base rate is 10%, he warned that some tariffs could soar as high as 60%, depending on the origin country and its trading history with the U.S.
“Other countries have treated America unfairly for decades,” Trump said. “This 10% is just the start. In some cases, we may need to impose 40%, 50%, or even 60% tariffs if that’s what it takes to level the playing field.”
Exemptions for Allies on the Table
Despite the sweeping nature of the policy, Trump hinted that certain friendly nations may receive partial or full exemptions. Countries like South Korea have already initiated talks with U.S. officials, requesting relief from the full impact of the tariffs.
In fact, South Korea has been granted a temporary delay—a 25% tariff that was supposed to be effective immediately will now be postponed until July 8, allowing time for bilateral negotiations.
“If a country wants special treatment, they’ll have to earn it by doing something extraordinary for the U.S.,” Trump remarked when asked about potential waivers for zero-tariff nations.
Even ‘Zero-Tariff’ Countries Not Spared
Trump made it clear that the baseline tariff applies universally, even to countries that currently impose zero tariffs on U.S. goods.
“Just because they charge us nothing doesn’t mean we owe them the same. If they want an exemption, they must take exceptional steps that benefit America.”
This policy shift is being framed as a protective mechanism that prioritizes American jobs and industries, particularly in the manufacturing and technology sectors.
New Trade Deals on the Horizon
The announcement of the baseline tariff was accompanied by a teaser: new trade agreements are in the works, although Trump declined to name specific nations involved. He hinted that these deals could be rolled out in the coming weeks, aligning with his broader strategy of renegotiating outdated agreements to better reflect American interests.
“We’re working on fantastic new deals. Much better than what we’ve had before. You’ll see very soon,” Trump said.
Growing Global Tensions
While the tariff policy has garnered support among domestic manufacturers, it has raised alarms globally. The State Department expressed serious concern about the increasing strategic cooperation between China and Russia, especially in light of a joint statement on North Korea.
“The growing China-Russia axis poses a risk not just to American interests, but to the security of many nations,” said a State Department spokesperson. “We are monitoring developments closely.”
With global reactions still unfolding, the new tariff policy is set to test America’s economic diplomacy. While Trump’s supporters hail the move as a long-overdue correction, critics warn it could ignite retaliatory measures, disrupt global supply chains, and fuel trade wars with key economic partners.
