In the aftermath of the brutal April 22 terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam that claimed the lives of 26 Indian nationals, geopolitical tremors have sent shockwaves across South Asia. The incident, executed by The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba and ultimately to Pakistan’s ISI, has escalated India-Pakistan tensions to dangerous new heights. But what’s catching even more global attention is the visible involvement of Turkey, which has moved swiftly to signal unwavering support for Islamabad in the unfolding crisis.
India Mourns, Pakistan Wavers—And Turkey Steps In
As India grappled with national grief and outrage, its military options were reportedly being reassessed behind closed doors in New Delhi. Meanwhile, Pakistan—accused once again of sponsoring cross-border terrorism—appeared visibly unsettled, caught in a swirl of diplomatic pressure and potential military retaliation.
Into this volatile setting stepped Turkey, dispatching six military aircraft and a warship to Pakistan, raising eyebrows and strategic alarms alike. The presence of Turkish military assets in Karachi came shortly after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan held a high-level meeting with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
Though Ankara described the military visit as part of regular bilateral cooperation, the timing has left analysts unconvinced. The optics of such a visit—within hours of a deadly terror strike linked to Pakistan-based groups—are hard to ignore.
Brotherhood Beyond Borders: Turkey’s Steadfast Stance
Turkey has long positioned itself as a staunch ally of Pakistan, often invoking Islamic solidarity and shared strategic interests. President Erdoğan, in his 2025 address, once again lent Turkey’s voice to Islamabad on the Kashmir issue, calling for international attention—an intervention India has denounced as an infringement on its sovereignty.
In a joint statement after their meeting, Sharif thanked Erdoğan for Turkey’s “unwavering support” and “moral clarity” on Kashmir, drawing a fresh rebuke from India. Indian officials termed the Turkish position as “irresponsible and provocative”, reiterating that Jammu and Kashmir is an internal matter.
Military Maneuvers or Strategic Messaging?
Turkey’s military footprint in Pakistan—comprising warships, fighter aircraft, and personnel—has sparked wide-ranging speculation. Is Ankara simply continuing its long-standing defence partnership, or is it sending a deliberate signal to New Delhi?
Some defense analysts see this as part of a broader Islamic alliance pivot, where Pakistan and Turkey’s growing military and intelligence cooperation serves both ideological and strategic goals. In 2024 alone, Pakistan imported over $5 million worth of arms, parts, and ammunition from Turkey, according to UN COMTRADE data.
Major General Rakesh Singh (Retd.), a New Delhi-based security expert, noted:
“Turkey’s presence in Karachi at a time like this is not coincidental. It’s a tactical move—both symbolic and practical. It suggests that Pakistan isn’t alone in this standoff.”
Turkey’s Role: Balancing Solidarity and Escalation
While Turkey’s consistent pro-Pakistan stance on Kashmir has previously drawn muted diplomatic criticism from India, the current situation is different. With lives lost and the possibility of an Indian response hanging in the air, the stakes are much higher. Turkish involvement, however symbolic, could complicate an already fragile equation between two nuclear-armed neighbours.
India has thus far refrained from direct military retaliation, opting instead for international pressure and intelligence-led countermeasures. However, any misstep or further provocation—especially with another foreign military visibly standing by Islamabad—could spark unintended consequences.
Ankara’s Calculated Gamble?
Turkey’s approach appears to be a calculated gamble: deepen ties with a like-minded partner while amplifying its regional influence, especially in Muslim-majority countries. Yet, this move may come at a cost. New Delhi’s diplomatic circles are reportedly reassessing bilateral ties with Ankara, with whispers of potential trade re-evaluations and diplomatic downgrades.
More critically, Erdoğan’s perceived interference may further alienate Turkey from emerging India-led multilateral platforms, including economic and strategic alliances in the Indo-Pacific.
Fragile and Fraught
As India mourns its dead and weighs its response, the growing Turkey-Pakistan military synergy sends an ominous signal across the region. With Islamabad cornered and Ankara emboldened, the specter of wider regional destabilization looms large.
