Starting August 1, 2025, the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has made a significant change in how employees across India will generate or activate their Universal Account Number (UAN). From now on, all UAN-related services—be it generation, activation, or updates—must be done through the UMANG app, with Aadhaar-based Face Authentication Technology (FAT) at its core.
This step is part of EPFO’s ongoing efforts to simplify the onboarding process, eliminate errors, and give employees direct control over their provident fund information—without needing to rely heavily on employers or physical EPFO offices.
Who Needs to Use the UMANG App?
If you’re an employee in India and want to:
- Generate a new UAN
- Activate an existing UAN
- Update EPFO details using biometric face scan
—then you must use the UMANG (Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance) app.
Note: Employees from Nepal, Bhutan, and foreign nationals working in India are currently exempt. For them, UAN generation can still be handled directly by their employers.
What Do You Need to Get Started?
To use the new UAN services, you’ll need:
- A smartphone
- The UMANG app (available on Android and iOS)
- The Aadhaar Face RD app
- A mobile number linked with Aadhaar
How to Generate a New UAN on UMANG
- Open the UMANG app.
- Select “UAN Allotment and Activation.”
- Enter your Aadhaar number and the mobile number linked to it.
- Give your consent and tap on “Send OTP.”
- Enter the OTP to verify.
- Follow the instructions to complete face scan authentication.
- If you don’t already have a UAN, one will be generated and sent via SMS.
How to Activate an Existing UAN
- On the UMANG app, tap “UAN Activation.”
- Enter your UAN, Aadhaar number, and linked mobile number.
- Give consent and complete OTP verification.
- Proceed with face scan using the Aadhaar Face RD app.
- A confirmation SMS with your temporary password will be sent, and the UAN will be activated.
For Users with Already Activated UANs
If your UAN is already active but you need to update your EPFO records (like address or profile photo), use the “Face Authentication of Already Activated UANs” feature in the UMANG app.
Why This Move Matters
This shift to app-based authentication is a major leap toward digital transparency and user empowerment. Here’s what employees can do once their UAN is activated:
- Check EPF passbook
- File withdrawal or transfer claims
- Download e-UAN card
- Update KYC details
- Track contributions
By placing everything at your fingertips, EPFO is not only reducing the paperwork and middlemen but also increasing security and accuracy in data management.
EPFO’s integration of the UMANG app and facial authentication may seem like a small tech update, but for millions of Indian employees, it’s a move that empowers them to handle their PF affairs independently—quickly, securely, and from anywhere.
If you haven’t downloaded the UMANG app yet, now’s the time. The future of provident fund access is digital—and it’s looking user-friendly.
