Visually Impaired Man Arrested for Smuggling Gold Worth ₹3.44 Crore at Bengaluru Airport

Bengaluru: Customs officials at Kempegowda International Airport arrested a visually impaired man on March 4 for allegedly attempting to smuggle gold valued at ₹3.44 crore from Dubai. The incident occurred just a day after Kannada actress Ranya Rao was detained at the same airport for a similar offence.

Gold Smuggling Attempt Uncovered

Acting on intelligence, Bengaluru Customs officials intercepted the passenger upon his arrival from Dubai. A thorough search led to the discovery of 3,995.22 grams of gold concealed under his shirt. Following the seizure, authorities registered a case of gold smuggling. The Bengaluru Customs department later confirmed the incident in a post on X.

Actress Ranya Rao’s Arrest & Security Tightening

This development follows the March 3 arrest of actress Ranya Rao by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI). Rao was caught smuggling 17 gold bars worth ₹12.56 crore, which she had hidden on her body. Investigations revealed that she had made 27 trips to Dubai in just six months and was allegedly paid ₹4-5 lakh per kilogram of smuggled gold.

Authorities suspect Rao misused her stepfather’s position as a Director General of Police (DGP) to secure VIP access at the airport, allowing her to bypass standard security checks. In response to the incident, Kempegowda International Airport has tightened security protocols, particularly for individuals with influential backgrounds.

Karnataka Government Revises VIP Privileges

Following Rao’s arrest, the Karnataka government has revised its protocol policies. As per new regulations, only senior bureaucrats will be entitled to VIP privileges at the airport, while their family members and acquaintances will no longer receive special treatment. This decision aims to prevent misuse of power and strengthen security measures.

Authorities continue to investigate both cases, highlighting growing concerns over organized gold smuggling networks operating through Indian airports.
