Wankhede Thriller: Will Jacks’ Heroics Take MI to Defendable 155 as GT Eyes Chase in Crucial IPL 2025 Clash

Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai – May 6, 2025:
In match 56 of the IPL 2025 season, Mumbai Indians posted a fighting total of 155/8 in 20 overs against Gujarat Titans after being put into bat by GT captain Shubman Gill. Despite early setbacks, Will Jacks’ quickfire 53 off 35 balls provided the much-needed momentum, while the Titans’ bowling attack kept the scoring under control on a pace-friendly Wankhede track.

Early Collapse: Rickelton and Rohit Fall Quickly

Mumbai Indians’ innings started on a shaky note as Ryan Rickelton (2) was dismissed in just the second delivery by Mohammed Siraj, caught by Sai Sudharsan. Soon after, the Wankhede crowd was stunned as former captain Rohit Sharma (7 off 8) was sent back, caught by Prasidh Krishna off Arshad Khan. At 26/2 in the 4th over, MI looked in trouble.

Will Jacks and Suryakumar Stabilize

The English all-rounder Will Jacks played a sensational innings under pressure, smashing 5 fours and 3 sixes at a strike rate of 151.43. Partnering with Suryakumar Yadav (35 off 24), the duo stitched a crucial 71-run stand. Just when MI looked to accelerate, Suryakumar was dismissed by Rashid Khan at a critical juncture in the 11th over.

Jacks too departed shortly after, falling to Sai Kishore after a well-made fifty, leaving Mumbai at 103/4 in 11.4 overs.

Middle and Lower-Order Wobble

Captain Hardik Pandya’s disappointing run continued, as he scored just 1 run off 3 balls, caught at mid-off by Shubman Gill. Talents like Tilak Varma (7) and Nehal Wadhera (7) couldn’t convert their starts, while Corbin Bosch’s cameo (27 off 22) gave MI a late push before being run out by a brilliant Rashid Khan direct hit in the penultimate over.

With bowlers Deepak Chahar (8)* and Kumar Kartikeya (1)* holding on in the final over, Mumbai could only manage 5 runs in the 20th over, finishing at 155/8.

GT Bowlers Shine Under Pressure

Gujarat Titans displayed a disciplined bowling performance throughout:

  • Rashid Khan once again proved his value with a tight spell of 4-0-21-1, strangling the middle overs.
  • Sai Kishore grabbed 2 wickets for 34 runs, removing two key batters: Suryakumar and Pandya.
  • Arshad Khan (3-0-18-1) and Gerald Coetzee (2-0-10-1) kept it economical.
  • Prasidh Krishna was expensive (4-0-37-1) but picked up the vital wicket of Nehal Dhir.
  • Mohammed Siraj, although expensive, provided the crucial first breakthrough.

What’s Next: Can GT Chase 156 Under Lights?

With a relatively modest target of 156 runs, Gujarat Titans will look to chase down the total under the lights at Wankhede, where dew could play a major role. MI’s key bowlers — Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult — are yet to make an impact and will have to fire early if MI hopes to defend the total.

This match holds immense significance in the playoff race. A win for GT will strengthen their position in the top four, while MI, languishing mid-table, desperately need points to stay in contention.
