West Bengal Weather Update: Thunderstorms and Rain to Bring Relief from March Heat — Check Full Forecast

West Bengal residents have been struggling with intense heat in March, raising concerns about the weather conditions in April and May. However, the weather department has provided some relief, forecasting thunderstorms and rain across South Bengal starting today. Let’s take a detailed look at the weather forecast for the upcoming days across West Bengal.

Thunderstorms and Rain Expected Across South Bengal

According to the Alipore Meteorological Department, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and hail are expected to hit multiple districts in South Bengal from Thursday onwards. Wind speeds are expected to reach 50–60 km/h in some areas. Increased moisture flow from the Bay of Bengal and favorable wind patterns are expected to create ideal conditions for rainfall.

On March 20 (Thursday), thunderstorms and rain are likely in Bankura, Jhargram, West Midnapore, Hooghly, and East Burdwan. The Met office has issued warnings for gusty winds at speeds of 40–60 km/h, accompanied by lightning and hailstorms.

March 21 (Friday) will see scattered rainfall across all South Bengal districts.
On March 22 (Saturday), heavy rainfall is expected in Birbhum, East Burdwan, Murshidabad, Nadia, North and South 24 Parganas, and East Midnapore. Kolkata and surrounding districts are also expected to experience moderate rainfall with thunderstorms.
March 23 (Sunday) will bring widespread rain to most districts of South Bengal, including East and West Midnapore and North and South 24 Parganas.
On March 24 (Monday), East Midnapore and South 24 Parganas are likely to witness scattered rainfall.

The rainfall is expected to bring down temperatures slightly, offering relief from the scorching March heat.

North Bengal to Experience Rain Too

Similar weather conditions are expected across North Bengal. Light to moderate rainfall is predicted for all North Bengal districts on Friday and Saturday. Wind speeds may reach 30–40 km/h in Malda, South Dinajpur, and North Dinajpur.
On March 23 (Sunday), rainfall is expected in most districts of North Bengal.
On March 24 (Monday), Darjeeling and Kalimpong are likely to receive rainfall.

Kolkata Weather Forecast

Kolkata is likely to witness partly cloudy skies today. Thunderstorms and rain are expected from Thursday onwards. The city may experience thunderstorms and gusty winds on Friday evening and Saturday evening.
Minimum temperatures in Kolkata are expected to hover around 26.6°C — about 3°C above normal — while the maximum temperature is expected to be 33.9°C — slightly below normal by 0.3°C.

Warning for Fishermen

With increased moisture from the Bay of Bengal and favorable wind patterns, stormy weather conditions are expected across coastal West Bengal. Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea until Friday due to rough conditions and high wind speeds.

The rainfall is likely to damage crops in some parts of the state. However, the drop in temperatures is expected to provide much-needed relief from the oppressive heat.
