In a heartbreaking incident that has sparked outrage and raised serious concerns over amusement park safety standards, a 24-year-old woman died after falling from a roller coaster ride at Fun and Food Village, an amusement park located near the Kapashera border in Delhi.
The victim, Priyanka, a sales manager and resident of Chanakyapuri, had visited the park on Wednesday afternoon with her fiancé, Nikhil. The couple, who had recently gotten engaged in February this year, were spending a day out together enjoying water rides and other amusements when tragedy struck.
According to the police, the accident occurred when the swing-type roller coaster ride was at its peak. A structural failure caused a part of the ride’s stand to snap, resulting in Priyanka being thrown from a significant height. She suffered critical injuries from the fall.
“During the roller-coaster ride, when the swing reached its highest point, the stand suddenly gave way and Priyanka fell straight down,” a senior police official confirmed.
Immediate efforts were made to rush her to a nearby hospital, but she succumbed to her injuries soon after being admitted. The police were notified by her fiancé, Nikhil, who also informed her family.
A case has been registered based on Nikhil’s statement, and a full investigation has been launched into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
Allegations of Negligence and Delay
Priyanka’s family has strongly alleged negligence on the part of the amusement park authorities. Her brother, Mohit, expressed deep anguish, stating that the ride was unsafe and should not have been operational.
“The swing stand was clearly faulty. If the park authorities knew it needed repairs, why did they allow people to ride it? This is outright negligence,” Mohit said. “After she fell, she wasn’t taken to the hospital immediately. That delay might have cost her her life.”
He also claimed that soon after the accident, the park authorities quietly shut down the affected section of the amusement park, including the roller coaster, to avoid scrutiny. “They are now hiding the evidence by closing down the ride. This should never have happened.”
Engaged in February, a Life Cut Short
Priyanka and Nikhil had recently gotten engaged and were planning their wedding for later this year. Friends and family describe her as vibrant, career-focused, and excited about the next chapter of her life. Her sudden death has left her loved ones devastated and seeking answers.
“This was supposed to be one of the happiest times of her life,” said a close friend. “Now her fiancé and her family are left with unimaginable grief.”
Safety Concerns at Amusement Parks
This incident has once again raised alarm over the safety protocols—or the lack thereof—at amusement parks across the country. While parks like Fun and Food Village attract thousands of visitors annually, the tragic accident points to potential gaps in maintenance, inspection, and emergency response procedures.
An industry expert, speaking on condition of anonymity, emphasized the importance of regular safety audits and third-party inspections. “A single failure like this can be catastrophic. All mechanical rides must undergo regular testing and structural checks. Operators and staff must also be trained for emergency scenarios.”
