In a controversial case that has sparked outrage, the Kerala High Court has ordered state police to take appropriate action against a man accused of desecrating a sacred Tulsi plant, an act considered deeply offensive in Hindu culture. The court also criticized the police for failing to register a case against the accused.
The Incident
The case revolves around a viral video featuring Abdul Hakeem, allegedly seen plucking his pubic hair and placing it on a ‘Thulasithara’ — a sacred pedestal for the Tulsi plant in Hindu households. The incident occurred in the temple town of Guruvayur, Thrissur district, and led to the arrest of another individual, Sreeraj R. A., who uploaded the video online. Sreeraj was charged with spreading enmity between religious communities and causing public disturbance.
Court’s Response
During Sreeraj’s bail hearing, Justice P. V. Kunhikrishnan expressed shock over the police’s failure to act against Abdul Hakeem despite clear video evidence. “The Thulasithara holds immense spiritual significance in Hinduism, and such actions undoubtedly hurt religious sentiments. It is perplexing that no case has been registered against Abdul Hakeem so far,” remarked the judge.
The police claimed that no action was taken against Hakeem due to his alleged mental illness. However, the court questioned this claim, noting that Hakeem owns a hotel in the Guruvayur temple complex and holds a valid driving license. “If he is indeed mentally ill, how does he possess a hotel license and a driving permit?” the court asked.
Tulsi and Its Significance
The Thulasithara, a platform where the holy Tulsi plant is grown, holds great religious importance in Hindu homes. It symbolizes purity, prosperity, and protection, with many believing it invites divine blessings.
Next Steps
The court has directed the police to investigate the matter thoroughly and take legal action against Abdul Hakeem. The judgment emphasized the need for fair investigation, especially when matters of religious sentiments are involved.
This case continues to draw widespread attention, highlighting the need for prompt police action and respect for religious beliefs.
