Lahore, April 7, 2025 — In a heartbreaking incident early Sunday morning, at least 17 people lost their lives and more than 30 others sustained injuries when a passenger bus collided with a trailer truck on the Multan-Sukkur Motorway (M-5) in Pakistan’s Punjab province.
The accident occurred around 4:30 AM near Jalalpur Pirwala, a town located in southern Punjab. According to rescue officials and police, the bus, en route from Lahore to Karachi, crashed into a stationary trailer truck that had reportedly broken down and was parked without adequate warning signs on the roadside.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as “horrific,” with passengers screaming for help as the front portion of the bus was completely destroyed. Emergency services including Rescue 1122, police, and fire brigade units reached the site within 30 minutes of the incident and began rescue operations.
“We recovered 13 bodies on the spot, while four others succumbed to their injuries in the hospital,” said Muhammad Ayub, a senior officer with Rescue 1122. “Most of the deceased were seated in the front rows of the bus, which bore the brunt of the impact.”
Over 30 injured passengers were rushed to Nishtar Hospital in Multan, with at least 10 of them reported to be in critical condition. Hospital authorities confirmed that some of the injured suffered head trauma, broken bones, and internal injuries. Medical teams were placed on high alert to accommodate the sudden influx of patients.
Preliminary investigations suggest that poor visibility due to early morning fog and a lack of reflective warning signs on the trailer were major contributing factors. Officials also mentioned that the bus driver might have been speeding in an attempt to make up for delays during the night journey.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended condolences to the bereaved families. In a statement, she ordered a detailed inquiry and directed health authorities to ensure the best medical care for the injured.
“The loss of so many precious lives in this accident is deeply saddening. I have instructed all relevant departments to submit a comprehensive report within 48 hours,” she said.
The National Highway and Motorway Police (NHMP) also issued a statement, urging heavy vehicle drivers to strictly follow safety protocols, especially when parking on highways. “This tragedy underscores the urgent need for enhanced enforcement of road safety measures,” said an NHMP spokesperson.
