New Delhi – April 11, 2025: After days of relentless heat, the national capital and its surrounding regions finally got a breather. Delhi, along with parts of Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh, was hit by strong winds and a sudden dust storm on Friday evening, dramatically altering the weather scene. Light drizzle further contributed to a much-needed drop in temperature, bringing relief to millions reeling under a severe heatwave since early this week.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the gusty winds and dust storm are expected to persist till around 9 PM. The weather office has also issued a public advisory, warning that the storm could damage crops, loose structures, and trees in the affected areas.
“Do not take shelter under trees, do not lie on concrete floors or lean against concrete walls. Unplug electrical appliances and avoid stepping into water bodies,” IMD cautioned, urging citizens to remain indoors unless absolutely necessary.
Winds Uproot Trees, Cause Local Disruptions
Several parts of Delhi witnessed tree branches falling due to the strong winds. Visuals from Lodhi Garden showed trees swaying violently under the force of the storm, while in the Delhi Gate area, a tree collapsed on a parked motorcycle, underscoring the sudden intensity of the weather change.
Despite the dust and debris, the light drizzle was welcomed across the city. Residents stepped out briefly to enjoy the cooler air, with many taking to social media to share visuals of darkened skies and dust-laden winds sweeping through the city.
From Heatwave to Hope: A Week of Weather Extremes
Earlier this week, Delhi experienced a brutal heatwave with maximum temperatures soaring to 40°C on Monday—the highest recorded this season. The scorching conditions persisted for three days, causing discomfort and health concerns, especially among the elderly and outdoor workers.
Wednesday marked another record as the capital recorded its warmest night in over three years, with the mercury refusing to dip below 25.9°C. Experts noted that such elevated night-time temperatures are a clear indication of worsening urban heat conditions.
What to Expect Next?
Meteorologists say that more weather fluctuations may occur over the weekend, with chances of isolated rain and winds across the northern plains. While the dust storm may cause temporary inconveniences, it is likely to have a cooling effect, especially over Delhi-NCR, which has been gasping for relief.
Public Advisory in Place
Residents are urged to exercise caution during this weather phase. Those with respiratory conditions should avoid exposure to dust, and all citizens are advised to secure outdoor objects that may get blown away. Farmers have also been asked to monitor their fields and secure produce where possible.
As North India transitions from spring to summer, these dramatic shifts in weather remind us of the growing unpredictability in climate patterns. For now, however, Delhiites are simply happy to trade dust and drizzle for a short break from the heat.
